Lava Flow Campground — Craters of the Moon National Monument

Campers reach this 42-site campground via a paved road directly at the entrance to Craters of the Moon National Monument, though some reviewers note rough access conditions on interior loops. The National Park Service operates this first-come, first-serve facility year-round, with sites turning over at 2 PM during busy periods. Payment requires a credit card at an automated machine, as cash is not accepted.

The campground sits entirely on volcanic terrain, with sites carved around existing lava rock formations that create natural windbreaks and privacy barriers. Annie C. found her site "set up between some lava rocks to get some semblance of a wind break" where she "could not see any other sites from inside my tent." Sites vary dramatically in size and configuration, from pull-through spots suitable for RVs to tucked-away tent areas. The farthest loop accommodates smaller rigs only due to tight turns.

Hiking trails connect directly from the campground to the park's 7-mile scenic drive, providing access to cinder cones, spatter cones, and lava tube caves. The North Crater Flow trail starts from camp, while Inferno Cone offers elevated views for those willing to climb. Free cave permits are required from the visitor center. Water access is restricted during peak season—RVs cannot fill tanks, though personal water containers are allowed.

Facilities include flush toilets and cold water sinks, but no showers or hookups. Campfires are prohibited throughout the lava field. Cell service is limited to nonexistent, even at the visitor center. Water service shuts off during winter months, reducing rates to half price. Sites 1-5 sit directly adjacent to the entrance station, while sites 34, 35, and 42 offer accessibility features.

For tent campers needing more traditional ground surfaces, tent sites near Craters of the Moon National Monument provide alternatives beyond the volcanic landscape.

Guests commonly noted the extraordinary lava rock setting and clean facilities, though sites are closely spaced with limited privacy. Many mentioned the unique camping experience among volcanic formations, while several observed that summer heat and wind can be challenging.

Unique Camping Environment

Definitely a unique campground. Sites are FCFS and this campground was very busy for this time of year, even with bathrooms closed (pit toilets only) and water shut off for the season. Sites are very close together but everyone was very respectful and relatively quiet. Lots of cool hikes in the nearby lava fields. International Dark Sky Park so great for stargazing too!

Nice but tight sites, first come first serve

We pulled in early afternoon and grabbed a pull through with Southern shade. You have to pay daily at an automated kiosk. Wifi at visitor center. Nice loop to drive with multiple hikes. Good info. Provided.

Camping Inside a Volcanic Wonderland (Craters of the Moon, ID)

Reviewed by: The Crew at Hitched4fun.com

If you are looking for one of the most surreal, otherworldly camping experiences in North America, Lava Flow Campground inside Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is an absolute gem. Tucked directly into a young volcanic landscape, this park lets you pitch camp surrounded by jagged, pitch-black basalt rock formations that feel more like the surface of the moon than south-central Idaho.

Rig Size Advisory: Tents & Small Campers Only

First and foremost, know what to expect before towing into the monument:

  • Best for Small Setups: This campground is strictly suited for tent campers, camper vans, truck campers, or very compact travel trailers.
  • Big Rigs, Beware: As we noted in our review of Mountain View RV Park down the road in Arco, this is not a big-rig friendly facility. The road cuts tightly through sharp volcanic rock, turning radii are tight, and there are no utility hookups. If you are towing a large fifth wheel or toyhauler like ours, basecamp outside the monument and day-trip in. But if you travel light, snagging one of these 42 first-come, first-served sites is an unforgettable experience.

An Educational Masterpiece for Families

If you have school-aged kids or grandkids who are currently learning about earth science, geology, or volcanoes, camping here is an absolute must.

  • Hands-On Learning: Walking straight out of your tent onto raw volcanic cinders and ancient lava tubes brings science textbooks to life instantly. Exploring the spatter cones, cinder fields, and underground caves will spark a genuine curiosity for the natural world that no classroom can replicate.
  • A True Regret: Standing in the middle of this volcanic landscape, I honestly wished I had known about this place when our own kids were that age—it is that impactful of a family adventure.

World-Class Dark Sky Stargazing

Because Craters of the Moon is a certified International Dark Sky Park, the night experience is just as spectacular as the daytime geology:

  • Zero Light Pollution: The monument is far removed from major cities, and the black volcanic rock absorbs ambient light during the day, leaving the nights ink-black.
  • The Night Show: The stargazing here is breathtaking. You can see the Milky Way stretch clearly from horizon to horizon with the naked eye. Sitting out at camp under millions of stars surrounded by silent volcanic silhouettes is worth the trip alone.

The Hitched4fun Verdict

Lava Flow Campground is a rare national park treasure that puts you right in the center of the action. While it lacks hookups and won't accommodate large RVs, its unique volcanic setting, incredible educational value for children, and world-class dark skies make it one of the coolest dry-camping stops in the West.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars— Highly Recommended by the Hitched4fun.com crew!

Nice spots if you search around

Most are pretty exposed and they close most services up early in the fall. I am in a spot close to the visitor center side of the park and get the wifi from the office. Otherwise with Verizon you have no services.

Great place to camp while visiting Creaters of the Moon

This campground is very clean but the sites are tight and would be impossible for larger rigs. The little roads to the sites are narrow too, with lots of rocks so you really have to be careful. But it is very convenient.

Cool place to visit

Spent one night here. The campground is first come first serve. I would say there are only two or three spots available for rigs that are over 30 feet long. Pretty tight quarters. Wouldn’t recommend anything over 35 feet coming in here. It is dry camping, but the sites were nice and level, and the bathrooms were very clean, although they did not have any paper towels or hand dryers. The drive around the park to look at al the lava flows was very cool. With our senior pass, it was only $7.50 to spend the night here.

My Favorite!

Amazing! We decided to stay two nights here on our road trip and it was the greatest decision ever. You feel like you are on another planet here. The wind came in a little crazy in the evening, but settled at night. There is a very strict no fires allowed policy due to the ancient pines that are there, but they do have charcoal grills at each site. The bathrooms were relatively clean with flush toilets and running sinks, and were beside a water spigot (seasonal), all were very close to our site. Because of the natural landscape each site is unique, with significant size variation. #37 was a great choice and right beside a hiking trail which made for a great night walk. I will say that you can easily get up that trail and do some nice stargazing, and wait for the moon to rise. The moon rising here was something I will never forget, as well as a rare late morning visit by a fox, truly an amazing place!

We were able to unload our side by side and travel the paved paths of the park. Be sure to get the cave permit from the camping booth ranger before heading out to explore. Amazing Gem of a Campground

The wife and I are new to camping. Our plan was to SUV camp at one of their back in site with the hook ups. Last minute I decided to book one of their renovated retro campers. We stayed in "Ruby". This cute little red and white 50-60's style camper had all the amenities, microwave, fridge, a/c, heater, coffee maker and a little sitting area for relaxing. The bed was comfy and the entire camper was warm, inviting and clean. Outside there was a firepit and a picnic table. There is also a very clean pit toilet 30 sec walk from camper. If you want hot showers and flush toilets, they have that too. They also had a retro playground for kids. Love love love this place!

I stayed here two nights. I made reservations online and received an email (and text) letting me know to head straight to my site, with no need to officially check in. The campground was huge with lots of stuff to do for kids. A hiking trail is attached to the grounds as well. Bathroom and shower were clean. The surrounding hills were pretty to look at with leaves changing in mid-october. Only downside is the noise from the highway but if you can tune that out, I highly recommend.

Beautiful campground!!

We stayed here for 2 nights when we had only planned on one, because it was so interesting and beautiful in the campground and on the drive see the volcano sites.

We are seniors with a National Park pass so we paid only $7 per night. There were plenty of sites available on the 3rd and 4th of July. No showers or electricity but we have a Rialta van and are self contained. We stayed at a different site each nite. The 2nd nite we had a great view of the scenery instead of a view of the visitor center.

The campground is located in an area of big lava rocks that must have been moved around to make great campsites surrounded by views and rocks. there were some really interesting sites to choose from, some in depressions with rock walls some on top of the hill for interesting views. It was our favorite campground of our 3 week trip.

The drive around the park was worth doing both days as there are nice hikes here and there, up cinder cones and spatter cones. There is a good nature trail with info markers and wildflowers that we enjoyed. The visitor center has a small museum with a short video and good info on how volcanoes function, etc.
