Within BLM Land managed by the Challis Field Office, Morgan Creek provides a forested camping experience alongside creek access from May through October. The campground features drinking water, toilets, picnic tables, and ADA accessibility, with campfires permitted throughout the operating season.
Access requires navigating a canyon drive that rewards visitors with bighorn sheep sightings along the route. The creek proximity brings increased insect activity during warmer months. Campers can explore additional places to camp around Challis or visit nearby Challis National Forest West Fork Morgan Creek Campground for different terrain options.
Description
This small campground is reached by taking Highway 93 five miles north of Challis to Morgan creek, then driving four miles up the canyon to the recreation site. The campground is located at the foot of a valley just before the canyon and is bordered by Morgan Creek. It is also located near a Bighorn Sheep Management Area. The diverse terrain here makes it excellent songbird habitat. Sparrows, thrashers, and wrens flit in the sagebrush, and juncos, kinglets, and nutcrackers shelter in the forest. Big game in the area includes bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope and mule deer. Continue on Morgan Creek road to reach the trailhead which accesses the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Amenities include: 4 campsites w/picnic tables & fire rings; 1 vault toilet; Potable water (hand pump)
