Accessible via forest roads that can become slick in wet conditions, Mosquito Flat Reservoir provides dispersed camping within Challis National Forest from May through September. The US Forest Service manages this drive-in and walk-in site near the reservoir, offering vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. No potable water is available on-site.
Campers can access both forested areas and lakeside spots, with pets welcome throughout the dispersed camping area. The location works well for anglers and those seeking a base for exploring campgrounds near Challis or nearby established campgrounds like Mill Creek.
Description
This recreation site has 11 campsites and a day use picnic area along the shore of Mosquito Flat Reservoir near Challis. Nearby, the Yankee Fork Trail (#147) provides access to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Each campsite is equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. The campground accomodates motorhomes and trailers up to 32-foot long. There are vault toilets on site, but no drinking water or garbage services within the site. From Challis, turn west up main street from Highway 93. Continue until pavement ends, stay right on dirt road to Custer Motorway (forest road 070). Follow custer Motorway to junction with Pine summit Road (080) 13 miles. Turn right onto Pine summit road (080), travel over Pine summit to junction with Mosquito Flat road (091) 4 miles. Turn left, Mosquito Flat Reservoir and Campground are approximately 1/2 mile.
