Ocenafront camping doesn't get much better than this!

General: Two campgrounds – Sandspur has oceanfront sites and Buttonwood is on the marina. We attempted to make reservations here 11 months in advance (as soon as they opened up) and were shut out. Lucky for us, we checked on a whim two days before our stay and there was a cancellation for an oceanfront site. Score! This review focuses on the Sandspur campground.

Site Quality: Each site in the Sandspur campground has a fenced-in area separating it from other sites. Although you can see your neighbors, there is a decent amount of separation between sites and the waves provide a noise buffer. Sites are gravel/rocky and flat. Electric hookups, a picnic table, and a grill complete the site.

Bath/shower: There are temporary bathrooms as the original ones are still under repair following hurricane damage. The temporary ones have a toilet, sink, and shower and were clean.

Activities/Amenities: The beach is rocky but there is beach access. There is a marina and a path to the old railroad bridge. Boat tours are available as are kayak rentals. There is a small store that sells t-shirts and other like items.

About the only thing that we didn’t like about this campground (aside from the difficulty securing a site) was the no-see-ums! They are vicious and you will be itching for weeks – but was worth the experience to camp right on the ocean!

Great way to relax in the Keys

Bahia Honda offers awesome camp sites, some right on the water with a fence separating you and the beach. Our campsIte had a picnic table and room for 2 small tents. We swam at the beach and went fishing during the day. It was close to the old bridge, which was cool to see. Critters (raccoons) are always looking for food, so keep your food and cooler locked!

Not during No Seeum season!

Tent camped 2 nights across road from the ocean.

Was supposed to stay 3 but couldn't take another night.

Good site with picnic table and water spicket. Heavy brush growth across road blocked view and access to the ocean. Long walk down the road to the beach.

No seeums were too bad for normal screens so I used my mountain tent with finer mesh screens. No breeze could penetrate so I suffered all night in the heat.

Day 2 I purchased 2 battery powered fans to move air through tent. Still stifling hot and high humidity.

Left one night early.

Ocean beaches were great as was kayaking and Spotted Eagle Ray sighting.

Portable air conditioning units are common in serious family campers here.

Awesome beach camping spot!

If you've ever wanted to camp by the beach, listen to the surf at night, and play in the water during the day, then this is the place for you.

You don't have to be a diver to experience the underwater beauty. Snorkeling will get you there just fine as well.

Exceptional views

You can walk from your tent and snorkel anywhere. Pros: ocean views from your tent, relatively shady, good wildlife, not too far from some shops/restaurants, lots of beachfront to enjoy. Cons: some highway noise (true of all the Keys’ campgrounds, really), could use another bath house (but it was fine), can be windy.

Absolutely beautiful

I didn't want to leave. Not a one thing was bad for us here. The views are some of the best around, clear blue water and the wildlife and fish are just as amazing as this park. Something for everyone of every age .

Beach camping

Open beach camp fire crackling in the air smell of the salt water and waves crashing on the shore now that's breath taking! Then waking up to the open sky and amazing sunrise , that's living!

Absolutely beautiful

This place has a breathtaking view you feel as if you are on some other island vacation when you are really just on the mainland of Florida highly recommend

Beautiful area but extremely small and crowded

This place is usually on everyone's list that is driving through the Florida Keys. Absolutely gorgeous, especially during low tide. However, the island is only 1 mile in length and 1000 ft wide...needless to say it's croweded...constantly. Great white sand beaches with crystal clear water. Decent amount of marine life around for snorkeling and scuba diving. There are major rip currents thar occur on the south side during low tide because of all the water is being sucked through the bridge. Cool place to take a kayak out to explore the area. Campground is busy and small. Campsites are small because the island is so small; so don't expect a lot of privacy. Great place to camp though if you do get a chance. There is a bathhouse as well. Bring enough supplies to where you don't have to go to the store because it takes a while to get to one.
