Rampart Reservoir Dispersed

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Hiking down to Rampart Reservoir and fishing its shoreline are among the main draws at this free dispersed area within Pike National Forest, where multiple side roads branch off Rampart Range Road to reach clusters of six to eight sites each. Views toward Pikes Peak open up from many of the sites. The access road is gravel and notably rough in places, with washboard sections that campers in standard passenger vehicles have described as a genuine workout, though at least one reviewer made it through towing a 20-foot trailer.

Timing matters here. Sites can fill quickly on summer weekdays, with one visitor noting most spots were taken by noon on a Wednesday. Crowds and traffic along the fire roads can be heavier during peak season, so arriving early or visiting in shoulder seasons like April tends to mean more space. Snow is possible well into May, and Daniel C. sums up the spring experience as "the road up here is rough, much of it is gravel." Elevation also means wind exposure at some sites, which can make leveling a vehicle tricky.

There are no developed amenities on site. Cell service is listed as available, and pets are welcome. A trail to the reservoir follows a river for much of the route, giving campers a straightforward way to reach the water. Rampart Range Area Dispersed Campsite sits nearby for campers who want to compare options along the same corridor before settling on a spot.

Visitors often highlighted excellent Pikes Peak views and proximity to Rampart Reservoir. Crowding varies greatly by season, with some finding complete solitude while others encountered busy conditions with heavy traffic.

Bumpy and windy

The road coming into this site was very washboardie if you know what I'm talking about. I try to find a different line but it was just very rough road. I got here about 7:00 and although there are many spots here I sleep in the back of my pickup truck so I wanted a level spot. It was hard to find a level spot. I know that the site can't do anything but the wind but it was extremely windy. But that's okay it's private and there's plenty of space here.

Remote, quiet, beautiful

Listen the road up here is rough, much of it is gravel. I managed to get up here with an 03 astro and a 20 ft trailer. It's doable but I did have to dig the seat out of my butt.

Gorgeous views, perfect weather for me in April (nice n cool!)

Solid tenting location

Multiple aide roads off rampart range road leading to 6-8 sites each. Excellent view of pikes peak. A little windy and exposed but not too bad. Most of the sites were taken at noon on a Wednesday.

Convenient and Clean

After a long day of traveling we looked for a campsite close to Colorado Springs. This place was very nice with a great view of Pikes Peak.

Dispersed Homeless Shelter

Maybe we hit it at the wrong time, but many of the sites (mostly the best ones) were filled with what appeared to be homeless camps and campers. Sites were all close, and there was a nearly endless stream of vehicles driving up and down the roads (there are several fire roads of the south side of Rampart Road) looking for empty spots. I was super disappointed.

Nice adventure

I loved it there, even though we got stuck in snow. We went there in May 3rd week and I loved it despite "bad weather". Our city car got stuck in the snow and we had to shovel our way out. However, I liked it how much into nature it was and of course the snow was beautiful. We didn't see any amenities around as such.

Great free area

Easy hike down to the lake along a river most of the way. Pretty quiet.
