Rampart Range Road - Dispersed Camping

About

USDA Forest Service

Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands

Rampart Range Road offers a prime spot for dispersed camping in the Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands in Colorado. This area is a gem for those who crave a bit of solitude and breathtaking views. The campsites are spread out enough to give you some privacy, though don't expect complete isolation, especially on weekends.

One of the standout features here is the stunning scenery. Whether you're perched on a cliffside or nestled among the trees, the views are nothing short of spectacular. Some campers have mentioned that the sunsets and sunrises are particularly memorable, so keep your camera handy.

While the area lacks amenities like toilets, showers, and drinking water, it makes up for it with its natural beauty and the freedom to camp without a permit. Fires are allowed, so you can enjoy a cozy campfire under the stars, but remember to bring your own firewood or an axe to gather some from around the site.

Pets are welcome, so feel free to bring your furry friends along for the adventure. Just be mindful of the local wildlife, including bears and mountain lions. It's a good idea to bear-proof your campsite and keep your food stored securely.

Cell service is spotty but available, particularly for Verizon users, which is a nice bonus if you need to stay connected. The road leading to the area can be a bit rough, so take it slow and steady, especially if you're in a two-wheel-drive vehicle.

Overall, Rampart Range Road is a fantastic spot for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in nature. Just be prepared for a bit of roughing it, and you'll have an unforgettable camping experience.

Nice views

This place has some nice views if you can get a good spot. We got there on a Thursday afternoon and there were still only a few hood spots open. By Friday afternoon/evening it seemed like at the existing spots were filled. Spots are decently well spaced so that we didn’t feel crowded or intruded upon, but lacked the isolation I usually try to find. I can’t speak for all the sites, but ours only had one good flat spot for a tent, luckily our friends had a small camping trailer that could be leveled for the sloped spot.

Indescribable views!

Washboard dirt road after paved. Be patient and go slow. It is well worth it. Passable by 2 wheel drive.

Beautiful, wild, 9300' elevation.

Pretty high up the mountain for an ex smoker but I didn't die, somehow. Bears and cats abound. I heard a cat bigger than the one that I had with me screaming his/her lungs out before sunrise. The area is beautiful and wild with an expansive tree canopy. I didn't take pictures because you can't see anything due to the forest. There are tree trunks and limbs around each campsite which are pull ins just off the road, so don't bring firewood, bring an axe. I saw a tent ripped to shreds and the campsite ransacked which was likely bears. Bring bear mace. If you make noise around the campsite and bear proof your comestibles you will be fine. Remember, if you see a bear it means you both screwed up, the difference being a bear having a panic attack is deadly. Campers, I have to request a favor:. Bring a big trash bag and haul away more trash than you bring. A few months of this can make this a pristine place to visit. I enjoyed it immensely.

Pretty alright

We arrived early on a Saturday and there were quite a few people already around and two spots available. Unfortunately there was trash everywhere and after we set up I went around to clean some up. I went through 25% of our area and collected two full grocery bags worth of garbage and there was still more around. The views were nice and there were a lot of birds around but some spaces were pretty close to other campsites.

Beautiful place to camp

Free area, lots of dispersed camping areas, but the main roads in is scored with ripples the whole way so it's gonna take a toll on your suspension. Definitely lots of wind up here both at night and in the day. Cell service works well out in the open. Great view of pike's peak.

Choose Your Own Adventure From Rampart Range Road

Rampart Range Road is the main dirt road that has plenty of smaller trails branching off of it to keep you busy exploring all summer. Rampart Range Road is accessible by 2wd vehicles while some of the smaller trails that branch off of Rampart Range Rd do better with a 4wd with high clearance. The southern portion of the road (south of Devils Head Trail) is open year around while the northern half of the road is closed seasonally during winter. Easily accessible outside of Woodland Park on the south end of the road and west through Sedalia. Lots of dispersed camping sites along the road, some are very large and could easily accommodate a large RV or large groups. Other campsites are tucked away off the road a little which is great because this road can be very busy & dusty in the summer. All in all, this place makes for a fun and easy weekend getaway as long as some ohv traffic doesn’t bother you too much. The best part of Rampart Range Road is the several forest service roads that branch off with dispersed camping. These smaller trails and dispersed camping make for a much more relaxing and peaceful weekend, I highly recommend if you have a 4x4. Find the right forest service road and you’ll feel like you are a million miles from it all.
