Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park

Dark sky viewing, dune hiking, and exploring the Sangre de Cristo range all draw campers to this Colorado State Land Board property outside Mosca. Sites at Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park sit within rolling native dunes and desert scrub, giving each site a degree of natural separation from neighbors. The open terrain means 360-degree sightlines toward the dunes and mountains, with no tree canopy overhead. Crowding has come up in multiple reviews, so booking ahead through the reservation system is worth considering.

The campground runs on a furnished-site model that sets it apart from most established campgrounds. Each site includes multiple level tent pads with electrical outlets, an outdoor kitchen with a foot-pump sink and two-burner stove, a shade structure, a Solo Stove fire pit, and Polywood chairs. A bathhouse provides flushing toilets, hot showers, and sinks. A small on-site shop handles firewood and toiletries via QR code. Cell service is limited at the site, though WiFi is available. Pets are welcome, and a dedicated leash hook is built into each site.

Leila sums up the kitchen setup well: "a sink with running water... made cooking and cleaning dishes a breeze." The campground also sits within a designated dark sky reserve, making clear nights worth staying up for. Nearby alternatives include Dunes Desert Camp and Zapata Under the Stars for those who want a comparison before committing. Ramble works best for campers who want gear-light access to a high-profile landscape without sacrificing basic comforts.

Glamping- kinda.

Stayed Friday-Sunday. Wish we stayed longer!

Such a cute campsite! You’re almost glamping here. Our site had 3 tent pads (5 of us, 4 tents. One tent pad could fit 2 2-4 person tents, the other 2 could fit 1 4-6 person tent each.) and it was very spacious. They’re raked so it’s not bumpy and it’s very even. Electric plugs at every tent pad. Campsite had horseshoe and cornhole.

Very grateful the little kitchen built in and the sun sails that kept the place shaded. Also has built in solar powered lights. It uses a foot pedal and a 5 gallon water jug that the camp host refills when texted. Had a little welcome bag hand sanitizer and hand lotion and camp stickers. They provide lavender hand soap and dish washing soap. Bring your own sponge.

The showers and bathrooms are the cleanest i’ve ever seen at a camp site and they smell good.

The sky at night was next level. Star visibility was insane.

There is a little store w camp merch, smores kits, drinks, ice cream, etc. -which was very nice and convenient. Ice gets delivered to you when purchased.

I would recommend bringing head lamps for journeys to the bathroom as the place is very dark and there are little cactus around. And bug spray for the little bugs that bite during the day.

Overall such a great place for first time campers or big groups. Would come back again.

Unique and beautiful!

Such a unique concept. HUGE sights and gorgeous views! Staff and host are fantastic. Even though the sites don’t have water/electric/sewer hookups, it never really felt like we were roughing it because there are so many great amenities here. Great location to the dunes.

Such a memorable camping experience!

We had the opportunity to camp at Ramble's Great Sand Dunes site prior to it being launched as early testers and couldn't have been more pleased with our experience. A sink with running water?!?! What a dream come true. Not only did we have a sink but a double burner that made cooking and cleaning dishes a breeze. The amenities at the site were incredible! We had flat tent pads which made sleeping in a tent so much more comfortable. We even had a power outlet to charge our phones in our tents. I loved the Polywood chairs and picnic table. So much more comfortable than our folding chairs and not having to worry about them blowing away was an added bonus. Making smores over the fire with all the views was breathtaking. I highly recommend this campground for campers who want some of those upscale amenities without compromising the camping experience! I can't wait to camp with Ramble again.

WOW! The views!

As a beta tester for Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park and their Evergreen test site, I was able to enjoy the complete Ramble camping experience at both locations. They certainly are dialed in on their anti-parking lot style approach. Camping at Ramble at Great Sand Dunes NP, my initial reaction was how beautiful and vast the views are at the campground. You have a beautiful backdrop of the Sangre De Cristo mountain range and the Great Sand Dunes off in the distance. My campsite was nestled comfortably between rolling dunes which created a super private camping experience. I look forward to when Ramble officially opens so I can take advantage of the bike trail and lay back and enjoy the dark skies. Bonus--- this campground is under a dark sky reserve!! At the Evergreen Test Site, I was able to experience a Signature Plus campsite, which had an outdoor kitchen and comfy tent pads. Having a working sink and large counter space made it easy to prepare meals for my friends and elevated my outdoor cooking experience. I look forward to camping at Rambles in the future-- especially if I only need to bring my tent and food, it makes it that much easier to get out and go camping!

Amazing family tent camping!

"The Ramble test campsite in Evergreen was full of unexpected surprises and delights and has me real excited to stay at Ramble's campground near Great Sand Dunes National Park. Located a short drive from Alamosa's small town main street, the campground is nestled in place and slowly meanders through native dunes and desert scrub. A real pleasant divergent from the typical campground landscape. This is an ideal campground for family car camping, not only for the seasoned campers, but those new to camping as well. The kitchen is outfitted with more than my family needs(2 burner stove, sink with water, storage cabinets and electricity), as well as the conveniences that we too often forget, such as soap and paper towels. I definitely appreciate the use of solar PV at the site to help minimize our impact. The Ramble campground also makes a conscious effort towards water conservation with automatic shut-off low flow fixtures and user controlled footpumps for the kitchen sink. The ample tent pads are convenient to the kitchen, yet far enough away for privacy and nestled into the scrub and dunes to be buffered from strong winds which can and do occur. With spectacular 360 degree views, I would definitely recommend this campsite for those looking for a great natural setting, full of family conveniences and close to world class landscapes!"

The Campgrounds you Deserve!

Our family of four (two adults and two kids + a dog) were lucky enough to tent camp at the Ramble Test Site location as early testers back in late September 2022. The campsite is modeled after the Signature Plus category and it is massive: three spread out and level tent pads with tie down hooks and each had its own electrical outlet that we used for tent lights and iphone charging. The campsite was well equipped with everything you'd need for an awesome camping trip. It had its own outdoor kitchen with a foot pump powered sink, drinkable water, a really nice Camp Chef stove, a solar powered outlet for small devices(plugged up the bluetooth speaker), a large shade structure, a picnic table, a fancy Solo Stove fire pit, six comfy but well built chairs, horseshoe pits and cornhole. The campsite was pet friendly and even had a dog leash connection hook. We used a trailer bathroom at this location but the location down near the Great Sand Dunes National Park will have its own bath house with flushing toilets, sinks, hot showers and baby changing areas. It also will include a mini shop that is QR code accessible for easy purchases of firewood and toiletries. I would highly recommend this campground for those looking for a genuine and upscale camping experience!
