This free dispersed camping area requires high-clearance vehicles and preferably 4WD to navigate the rough access road, particularly after rain. Campers enter through an unlocked gate just off Highway 150, with multiple small BLM pull-offs available along the route. The approach road can be challenging, but most pickup trucks handle it well when driven slowly.
Sites cluster near a small stream that runs through the area, providing water access and established fire pits. The terrain offers open mountain views across the San Luis Valley, though the ground remains bumpy and uneven. Campers report finding adequate cell service, with AT&T showing 4-5 bars of 5G signal, though data speeds may be limited to 1-3 Mbps. Tree cover increases at higher elevations compared to other camping spots near Blanca in the region.
The area accommodates various RV sizes, with visitors successfully camping in 20-foot trailers and larger RVs like the E350. However, pet owners should note the presence of young cactus throughout the area. Matthew Z. found "plenty of fire pits" and appreciated the stream access, while summer visitors report encountering numerous biting insects.
This spot works well for self-sufficient campers comfortable with rough road conditions who want free camping near Great Sand Dunes National Park.
