Steamboat Rock Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Steamboat Rock Campground sits within Grand Mesa National Forest at an elevation that puts open sightlines toward the mesa's forested ridgelines directly in view. Road access is a recurring topic in visitor accounts, and for good reason: the drive in runs along gravel and dirt surfaces that reward slower, deliberate driving. The campground is reachable as a drive-in or walk-in site, making it accessible to a range of vehicle types without requiring four-wheel drive.

Drinking water is available on-site, which matters at this elevation and distance from resupply points. Campfires are permitted, and pets are welcome. Cell service is listed as an amenity, though coverage can vary across the mesa. Campers note the area fills up as the day progresses, particularly on weekday afternoons, so arriving earlier gives a better shot at site selection. The surrounding terrain includes rock formations that invite scrambling, and the forested landscape provides context for hiking directly from camp.

Bryan P. describes the setting as having "non stop views" once you reach the campground, which aligns with the scenery theme that appears across multiple reviews. Quiet is also mentioned, though the campground does draw visitors. The combination of water access, fire rings, and proximity to Grand Mesa's trail network makes it a functional base for multi-day stays. Campers exploring campsites near Grand Mesa National Forest will find additional options across the surrounding forest, including North Fork Kannah Creek BLM Dispersed to the northwest for those who prefer a more dispersed setup.

Many campers appreciated the spectacular views and peaceful setting despite challenging access roads. Facilities appear inconsistent across the campground, with some areas offering water while others remain primitive.

Amazing!!

Absolutely beautiful spot! Beautiful drive to get there. If you take the Yampa Bench Road to get there, you will need 4WD. Expect a solid three hour drive with beautiful views. Going in on the Echo Park Road, it is much shorter, only 12 miles as opposed to 43 on Yampa Bench. The first couple of miles are a bit rough and steep but 4WD not needed although would at least recommend AWD. Once you reach the campground the setting is amazing with non stop views. It is $10 per night and worth every penny. It also has potable water located throughout the campground. Can’t wait to go back!!

Beautiful!!!!

A cut above the rest. This campground is off road. Has no bathrooms nor water source. But offers hiking, rockclimbing and just peace and quiet. We stayed here for two days and it was absolutely gorgeous to hike all of the mountain trails. We arrived on Wednesday and found a huge sure and there was nobody around for miles.   We set up our tent and built a fire and are dinner snd watch the sun set it was magnificent.   After dinner We climbed all over the rocks that were around our campsite and hike to the top of the rock Peak. We could see for miles in the landscape is gorgeous. We will definitely go back to this campsite and hopefully take family on our next adventure.

Hidden Gem

This campground was at the bottom of Sand Canyon...the road was very steep and rugged for the first 1/2 mile, after that it was fairly manageable. 4 stars because the river was so low...other than that a sublime campground. When we arrived, Thursday afternoon, we were the only campers...campground almost filled by the end of the day. There was a river hike, petroglyphs, a life saving cave on a hot day, and a wonderful abandoned ranch to explore. Would love to return someday.
