Frazer Meadow Campground — Golden Gate Canyon

Fishing, hiking, and mountain biking all converge at Frazer Meadow Campground, one of several established camping areas within Golden Gate Canyon State Park. Dude's Fishing Hole sits within the meadow, and the park's trail network connects directly from camp, giving anglers and hikers quick access without driving to a trailhead. Sites here are more spread out than at Aspen Meadows Campground — Golden Gate Canyon, which reviewers note tends to feel more densely packed.

The campground runs from mid-May through mid-October and features full hookups with electric, water, and sewer, plus showers and a dump station. Sites sit in open terrain, so shade varies depending on time of day. Crowd levels follow a predictable pattern: summer weekends draw more traffic, while shoulder-season visits tend to be noticeably quieter. Pets are allowed. Reservations are available and worth booking ahead during peak months.

Access comes with a caution. The road in can be rough, so drivers with low-clearance vehicles should factor that in before arrival. Nightly fees run $18. Mikaela R. sums up one of the campground's recurring draws simply: "Dude's Fishing Hole is my dog's favorite place in the world." Campers wanting a more primitive experience can look at Rim Meadow Primitive Campground — Golden Gate Canyon, located roughly a half mile to the southeast.

Visitors repeatedly highlighted the clean, well-spaced sites with bear boxes and convenient amenities. Many campers appreciated the private, quiet atmosphere, especially during off-peak seasons.

Great Beginner Friendly Backpacking Option

This was my first backpacking experience and I couldn't recommend it more for first timers. There is a designated pad for your tent, a bear locker and even an outhouse all nearby. My wife and I stayed at site K and it was beautiful.

Well kept

Site #7 was clean, maintained. One official tent site and a good spot for another two person tent. Partial sun depending on time of day. Between two other campsites so possibly noisy in the evening depending on your neighbors.

We love GGC!

Dude's Fishing Hole is my dog's favorite place in the world. We love GGC especially the Forgotten Valley hike. Feed the fish at the ranger station 🐟
