Within Colorado Parks & Wildlife's Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, Ruby Mountain Campground sits along the Arkansas River south of Buena Vista. The single-lane gravel access road narrows considerably near the campground, creating tight spots where larger RVs might struggle to pass oncoming traffic. Each of the 30 sites features a multi-level design with gravel tent pads, fire rings, and picnic tables positioned at different elevations.
The campground operates without hookups, running water, or trash service, requiring campers to pack everything out. Vault toilets provide the only facilities. Sites in the upper sections offer views across the valley toward the Collegiate Peaks but lack shade, making them hot during summer days. Walk-in sites near the river provide tree cover and the sound of flowing water. "Sites are large and renovated a few years ago," notes Rebeca H., who also mentions that dogs enjoy watching chipmunks around the sites.
The Arkansas River runs directly alongside the campground, providing fishing access and serving as a put-in point for whitewater rafting. A boat ramp accommodates both private and commercial river users. Brown's Canyon National Monument borders the area, offering hiking trails accessible from the campground. ATV trails wind through the surrounding Four Mile Travel Management Area, though these require true 4WD vehicles rather than all-wheel drive.
Reservations are required April through October, with same-day bookings accepted. The campground remains open year-round but operates first-come, first-served during winter months. Cell service reaches most sites with Verizon showing two bars or better. Wildlife sightings include bighorn sheep, deer, and occasional mountain lions in early morning hours. An additional $9 daily vehicle pass applies beyond the camping fee. Chalk Creek Campground & RV Park provides a full-service alternative less than a mile away for those needing hookups or showers.

Directions
Unlike most other Colorado State Parks, Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) does not have one set of driving directions to get to the park. This is because the AHRA is actually a linear recreation area that follows the Arkansas River for 152 miles from the high mountains near Leadville, Colorado, to Lake Pueblo, on the edge of Colorado plains. There are a number of highways and roads entering the valley. Along the way, the AHRA has eight basic campgrounds, numerous picnic areas, fishing and boating access points and trail access. PLEASE NOTE: You _do not_ need to check in at the visitor center prior to your arrival if you are camping. You may go directly to the campground.
