Off the main access road to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, this dispersed BLM camping area sits just one mile from the park entrance. The rough dirt roads branch off into multiple camping zones scattered through scrub oak and juniper trees, with sites tucked between the vegetation for natural privacy.
Road conditions determine much of the camping experience here. After rain or snow, the dirt tracks become muddy with deep ruts that challenge even AWD vehicles. Kat P. notes the roads were "rugged and muddy so we opted for the first site on the right of the entrance to avoid trouble." Campers with standard cars or trailers typically stay close to the entrance, while those with high-clearance vehicles can access more secluded spots deeper in the network of forest roads.
Most sites feature existing stone fire rings and enough space for tents or small RVs. The terrain includes cacti and rocky ground that makes finding level tent spots challenging at some locations. Trees provide wind protection and privacy between neighboring campers. Cell service runs one to two bars on Verizon, enough for basic communication but unreliable for streaming.
Wildlife sightings include deer, rabbits, and occasional bear sign given the proximity to the national park. Karen J. emphasizes to "leave your site cleaner than you found it," as some areas show signs of previous campers' neglect. Rangers patrol the area regularly, adding a sense of security for overnight stays.
The location works well for early morning access to Black Canyon before crowds arrive. Campers looking for additional options in the region can explore campsites near Montrose about eight miles away. No amenities exist on-site, so visitors need to bring water and plan for waste disposal at the national park facilities.
