Washboarded dirt roads and constant vehicle traffic define the approach to this free dispersed camping area near Travertine Hot Springs. Campers set up in pull-off spots along the access road, maintaining the required distance from the springs themselves where overnight stays are prohibited. The Bureau of Land Management allows camping in designated areas with established fire rings, though Laura M. notes "so many cars zip in and out on the dirt road leading to the hot springs, from early in the morning to pretty late at night."
The camping area clusters into two main zones: a group of six sites close together and several more isolated spots for campers seeking solitude. RVs up to 30 feet can navigate the rutted road, though reviewers recommend driving slowly due to washboard conditions. Cell service reaches the area with good reception across major carriers. Wind can pick up significantly, and road noise carries from nearby Highway 395 along with hourly church bells from town.
A half-mile walk separates the camping spots from the hot springs, where multiple pools offer varying temperatures. Early morning soaks provide the most privacy before day visitors arrive around 11 AM. The springs maintain comfortable soaking temperatures and lack the sulfur smell common to other geothermal areas. Clothing optional policies apply, though most visitors wear swimwear.
No amenities exist at the camping area itself—no water, restrooms, or trash collection. A vault toilet serves visitors at the hot springs parking area. Campers must pack out all waste and bring their own water. The town of Bridgeport sits 1.4 miles west for supplies and fuel, though gas prices run notably high. Sites around BLM Land — Bishop Field Office provide additional options for extended stays in the region.
The area offers easy access to Mono Lake, Yosemite's eastern entrance, and Bodie State Historic Park for day trips between soaking sessions.
