BLM's Palm Springs/South Coast Field Office manages Painted Canyon, a dispersed camping area in the Mecca Hills where the road in sets the tone for everything that follows. The unpaved access road is manageable for two-wheel-drive vehicles along the main route, but sand deepens noticeably toward the canyon end, where 4WD becomes a practical necessity rather than a suggestion. Campers who drive past the main cluster of sites find more tucked-away spots with fire rings already in place.
The canyon walls themselves give the area its character. Rock formations shift in color and texture with the light, and hikers can follow a marked trail system that includes ropes and ladders at the road's end. From higher elevations on the loop, the Salton Sea is visible in the distance. Wildlife sightings have included hummingbirds and whiptail lizards. Bugs, including gnats and ants, are present but reviewers generally note they are not a serious problem.
Cell coverage is limited and inconsistent, with Verizon users reporting occasional signal and AT&T becoming spotty to nonexistent further in. One pit toilet sits near the beginning of the road, with additional facilities roughly halfway to the turnaround point. Hikers begin arriving in the early morning, so sites closer to the trailhead see more foot traffic than those further back. Nearby, Mecca Hills Wilderness Dispersed Camping and Box Canyon Dispersed provide additional options in the same corridor. Painted Canyon works best for campers comfortable with sandy desert roads and minimal infrastructure.
