Mecca Hills Wilderness

This free dispersed camping area requires navigating five miles of sandy dirt road to reach the main camping zones near Painted Canyon trailheads. Multiple campers confirm that four-wheel drive vehicles handle the route more easily, though some front-wheel-drive cars make it through with careful driving. The Bureau of Land Management allows camping anywhere off the main Box Canyon Road, giving visitors flexibility to find isolated spots among the desert rock formations.

Campers report finding established fire rings and pullout areas scattered throughout the canyon approaches. The area stays relatively quiet despite multiple groups camping simultaneously, with enough space between sites to maintain privacy. Cell service reaches most camping areas unless visitors venture deep into the canyon system. Several reviewers mention encountering wildlife, particularly foxes that investigate campsites at night.

Road conditions present the main challenge here, with sand depth increasing toward the wilderness boundary. "Got stuck in the sand and had to be towed out," notes Josephine A., echoing experiences from multiple visitors. Some campers also report hearing target shooting in the area. The site works well for groups with off-road vehicles seeking desert solitude and access to Ladder Canyon and Painted Canyon hiking trails.

Guests commonly noted the beautiful desert setting and excellent hiking opportunities, though access requires careful driving on sandy roads. Most found it perfect for solitude-seeking campers with proper vehicles.

Nice but sandy!

If plan to go decently far in or off the trail at all, make sure to have a 4x4 or traction boards at least. Got my camper van stuck here and even the tow truck almost got stuck. Thanks to Baja Boyz for getting me out! Otherwise some nice views here but also beware there may be sportsman out here firing. While I was waiting for the tow truck, heard lots of shooting.

Unique beauty and splice

This is a good spot if you are willing to g to drive the 5 miles on the dirt road. Very sandy. Recommend 4 wheel drive but doable without if you are careful. Lots of spots to pullout while heading into the canyon. Several people in the area the night I was there but plenty is space and solitude. Did the ladder canyon hike the next day. Decent cell service unless you go far the up the canyon then none.

4x4 required, super deep sand

Drove up this road thinking it would be okay, but as I got closer to the location, the sand got deeper. At night it was especially hard to see. Any of the roads going off the main road were too deep with sand to get into without getting stuck. Had to turn around and ended up parking closer to JT park.

Beautiful and isolated

At the end of the dirt road through the winding rocks we nestled into a campsite closed to the trailhead. We barely had any neighbors it was so quiet. Words of advice, make sure you have shade for sunny days and pack up your garbage because there are little foxes at night that will wake you up when digging through your trash!

One of the best!!

This place was amazing! We loved the hiking and massive cliff walls. Truly awe inspiring! 4x4 is very helpful here but we did see a few front wheel drive cars.

A GREAT ESCAPE!

I researched this spot a ton and was hesitant to go - mostly because my 1987 VW Westfalia isn’t 4WD, and everything I read said you must have an off road vehicle, but the area looked beautiful and we didn’t have lots of campground options based on COVID park closures so we went.

I’m glad we did.

Box Canyon Road - the main road that goes right through Mecca Hills is paved and that drive alone was worth it. Beautiful.

The reviews were right that my car couldn’t make it to Painted Canyon or Mecca Wilderness Campground (a bit past Painted Canyon), but because it’s BLM land there’s dispersed camping anywhere off Box Canyon Road, which was amazing.

We saw old campfire pits all over and we pulled off on a dirt road that didn’t need 4WD, found a man made rock pit and setup shop. It was around a mountain so we felt totally isolated.

I had to be careful where to drive as there’s lots of sand but it was great. Glad we went. There were two other cars within site of us doing the same thing.

We had a great fire that night and enjoyed the stars and solitude.

Beautiful

This is an awesome place to camp. I didn’t have high expectations but after going, it’s perfect for any off-roader. We travel in large groups so this site is ideal for us!

Dispersed camping in the desert

Came  here to hike Ladder Canyon and Painted Canyon. Before the trailhead there are lots of areas for dispersed camping. It's an unpaved road that can be challenging to drive in at times, so would recommend 4x4 high clearance vehicle. Overall a nice remote place to camp out in the desert!
