      Rancho Seco Recreation Area

      All types of fun !

I love this place because it is about 45 minutes from the house.  There's plenty to do with lots of great sites.  The first time we went, they didn't have any annual passes because they lady was out that day. But the other day, we were able to finally get a season pass.  You can fish, hike, or swim here. The campsites are spacious and you don't feel over crowded if there is a family next to you. It's pet friendly. The store was recently redone and they offer a wide variety of items, from keep sakes to any necessity you may have forgotten ( lighter, logs, clothes shoes, etc... )  There also boat rental that are a fair price, plus you get them for an hour or so. ( You will have to check the prices and availability. ) There's a dog park for the dogs to roam free off the leash, which also has access to water/ beach area for the dogs only.

      American River Resort

Family of 4 roof top tent camping

Nice campground - close to river. .5 mile walk to town for shopping/eating. All sites have fire pit and picnic table. Bathrooms clean and private showers. A little pricey for a tent site - 45.00 and 5.00 for the dog but it’s California.

      49er Village RV Resort

      Convenient to area wineries

General: This is a HUGE RV park (a Sun Resort) with back-in, pull-through sites, and cabins. We called a day ahead to see if there was room and on a weekday in early May, there was plenty of availability. We even received a Spring Flash Sale (40% off) rate which, although more than we usually spend to camp, was reasonable. As is typical of RV parks, there is a small patch of lawn between sites but virtually no privacy. There are trees throughout the park and although it is located right on the road, only the sites that back up to the road hear road noise. There is a small pond in the center and we saw some ducks. All camping sites have full hook-ups and a picnic table but no fire ring or grill. There is a large laundry room and a café. We were assigned a site at check-in.

Site Quality: Pads are paved and level. The back-in sites in the center back up to each other with no divider between them. I saw several large RVs look almost like they were touching!

Bathhouse: Two bathhouses each with three stalls, two sinks, and two showers. Although there is a curtain separating the showers from the rest of the bathroom, the bench is outside of the shower stalls, which could be awkward. However, in the time we were there, I never saw a single person in the bathroom(assuming most people use their own bathrooms in their RVs). The shower had good water pressure and hot water.

Activities: There is a pool, playground, rec center. Shuffleboard, horseshoes, and beach volleyball. It is a half-mile around the perimeter, so I was able to enjoy a short run.

This is not our usual type of camping experience, but since we met friends at a nearby winery, this worked for us since we did not want to drive far.

      Brannan Island State Recreation Area

      Near Sacramento river

This is a big campground with everything you need for boating and fishing. They have a big boat launch for easy launching. They closed their boat berths because they were rotting. They have one cabin with electricity. It has a bunk bed And a queen. Bring air mattresses cause they are just wooden frames. Very close to the Sacramento River for a nice cruise.

      Pardee Reservoir Recreation Area

      Beautiful in Spring

Beautiful. Not crowded. All the RVs are on one shaded hillside. Nice to park in the trees. Electric, water, sewage hook up all easy access. Each site comes with fire ring and picnic table, all also in the shade.

      Coloma Resort

      Nice place next to river

This place is north east of Sacramento. Coloma resort is what some friends call "Glamping", but it's so much more than that. You can tent camp (it's covered sites for camping too), rent a cabin or RV camp. Great sites along the river too. One negative, is you have to book way ahead of time, but it's well worth it. You can pan for gold, relax, or bike, hike along the river, and kids can play along several playgrounds for kids of different ages. A large grass area great for games, and if you are up for it, rafting, kayaking and fishing in the cold American river. You can also learn some history about the discovery of gold and check out Sutter Mill!

      Rancho Seco Recreation Area

      A Gem

This is a wonderful spot to stay for a few days in the off season. We stayed in February. Summers would be very hot and I imagine the area would be packed with day use folks. 12 miles from I-5 out in the country. Very quiet.  21 water and electric sites with a dump station on the way out. Some pull through sites. About 50 tent only sites, some just feet from the lake. RV sites are farther from the lake on mostly level gravel pads with picnic table, fire rings, and a trash can at each site. The grounds are very attractive and very well maintained and all of the staff we encountered were friendly and accommodating. There is one marked hiking trail that follows the lake shore for the first mile then through a field with cattle.

    What to do

You will not strike it rich, but with a couple hours of effort you can get a nice little bottle of gold flakes to take home with you," explains one camper.

Swimming and recreation: Rancho Seco Recreation Area offers cabin lodging with multiple water activities. A visitor shares: "Good rated, easy to book online, clean campgrounds, regular maintenance and trash pick up, clear and beautiful water, awesome views."

    What campers like

Cabin variety: SacWest RV Park & Campground features cabins alongside other lodging options. "This is a nice little place on the edge of town. A maverik next door that can be noisy-as any gas station can be- but even closer to it it's not too much," reports one guest.

Proximity to historic sites: Cabin accommodations at American River Resort provide history buffs easy access to regional attractions. "Campground was clean and well taken care of. It is right in the American River and next to a class 3 rapid called Trouble Maker. It was awesome watching rafters and kayakers go through it," notes a camper.

Multiple recreational facilities: Cabin guests at 49er Village RV Resort enjoy extensive on-site amenities. "The kids loved the stocked fishing ponds, and even better was the immaculate 2 swimming pools and playground! Everyone was busy having fun the whole time and the grounds were perfectly kept."

    What you should know

Summer heat preparations: The Gold River region experiences intense summer heat, often reaching triple digits. "Not a lot of tree cover for the RV sites- make sure you bring shade with you. Luckily, there's a nice cool river to swim in!" advises a visitor to Thousand Trails Ponderosa.

Cabin amenity variations: Cabin facilities differ significantly between properties, with some offering bare essentials while others provide more comforts. "Nice getaway, pros would be doing just water and electric hook up so your away from the crowd, clean and quiet, great wifi, cons next to freeway, expensive, no firepit but have a communal fire pit."

Seasonal pest considerations: Some properties experience seasonal insect activity. "I do not know if this is because of the weather but the whole park is infested with ground beetles that would just land all over you and your food.
