Pleasant campground

A pleasant campground. I was able to find a shaded campsite with no reservation on a Friday in May at 5 pm. A few bugs, but nothing outrageous. My dog's happy. I'm happy. She's enjoying a chew stick. I'm enjoying a beer.

Great hidden gem with lots to explore!

We stayed here for a few days with some friends and our four children and dog! Very cheap! We did not have any hookups for our back in spot. We camped with a 19/26 Trailmanor Camper. Lots of space, not very busy during weekdays but the manager said it gets full on weekends. It was so empty on the weekdays that the kids could ride their bikes all over without much worry of running into vehicles or other campers! Next to wineries, trails, Palomar Mountain and observatory, Julian, a huge nature preserve and more! Absolutely loved this campground! Come with most of what you need though or stop at Walmart in south Temecula because the only stores are 15+ minute drives and don’t have a lot of necessities.

Spacious Oasis

Great oasis in the middle of the desert. The oaks provide tons of shade over the spacious sites. We got a double fee site and there was plenty of room to spare.

Great staging ground for hikes in the area like Eagle Rock or the backside of Palomar Mountain. You can also hook up with the PCT.

Gotta hit Garage 79 down the road. Sweet gas station converted to a bar with a killer taco truck.

Fast getaway

Oak grove is a quick and easy drive to just get away for the weekend. The only complaint I have is the Flies are crazy and does not make being outside enjoyable. I have been here twice and both times were the same problem. I would love to come back but I think I will try Dripping springs next.

Does The Job

Basic USFS campground, nicely priced at$15/night ($30 for double sites). $5 day use fee.

Reservations can be made at recreation.gov, and sites 1,2,4, 51, 52 (double site), and 64 are FCFS.

Campground is ok but actually kind of boring, it’s close to the road (so it’s easy access and nice and cheap for a place to stop for the night). There isn’t much to do there. Sites are level and overgrown with grass. We drove through and almost all the sites were empty, but they had a “reserved” tag. The non-reservable sites were all available. I’d check with the host if you want to stay but all the sites have that reserved tag.

Good cell service.

Spacious site, quiet campground

Double fee site was very spacious. Lots of coyote howls at night that would wake us up.

We went in December, most of the vegetation was brown and crunchy. Not very many other folks at the campground, which is how we like it.

Good quick weekender

I stayed here with my fiancé and pup. We have a tent in the bed of our truck and it was an easy pull up spot at the end of the road. Only negative is there isn’t much to do here so many people take a walk around the campsites and come by every site. It’s was very dusty, which is expected but there was a wind storm the second night we stayed. Stayed here in late April which was about 85-90 and I’m sure mid summer gets much hotter!

Little Getaway

Far enough out the city to get away from it all . Site was clean and flush toilets on ribbon wood loop. Trails were sparse , only found 2-3 small half mile trails to trek . Saw wild turkey !

It was hoooot

We just did a quick overnight trip for our doggo’s 3rd birthday and to scope out this place for for future visits. It was okay. No sinks in the bathrooms which is fine. Bathrooms weren’t that clean but it’s camping so we don’t care. We went the first weekend of August...don’t EVER do that. It was soooo effing hot and there were red ants all over our campsite. We had to practically quarantine ourselves in our tent to get away from them. The other reason for the 3 stars was the campground and campsite were literally surrounded by thick brush that was ALL stickers. We like adventuring out with our dog but we couldn’t do that because the thorned/sticker brush was so thick he would’ve been covered if we went outside the lines of our campsite.

Other than that, easy to find and get to. Lots of trees and would definitely try this place out again but during the cold months. Maybe a January or February trip would be better

Basic party site by highway

Well maintained and GREAT privacy! Appreciated that we couldn’t see any other sites. However, we could hear other people and they were partying really hard (even during a pandemic) and went till about 11pm Friday and Saturday night. We even heard people screaming and fighting with each other. Despite the campers, the site itself was nice. We camped at #32, right by the bathroom (flush toilets a plus) and a water spigot. We had trees for shade and most of our site wasn’t visible from the street. This site is right off the 76 highway and you can hear it all night, so it doesn’t feel like a true escape. Nature wise - lots of red ants that bit our dogs’ paws (come prepared). Each night we heard coyotes howling like crazy, it was very cool!

Great Basecamp

Camped here with my wife and a couple friends over a weekend in March during the Anza Borrego super bloom and was very suprised. Went hiking in the palomar mountains and even drove down to Borrego Springs and hiked Palm Canyon. camp ground was nice with lots of spaces, clean toilets, and nearby water spigots. Only complaint is that you cant buy firewood from the host.

Just get out there!

I love Oak Grove Campground! We were there for the full moon last month and even though it rained in the morning as we packed up me and my motorcycle camping friends had a blast sitting around the campfire and enjoying peace and the Darkness, that comes with being this far away from the city. I camp at Oak Grove at least twice a year sometimes up to six times a year and if never made a reservation due to its under-utilized situation. Don't tell anyone. It's our little secret. It's very handy if you want to section hike that part of the Pacific Crest Trail and there are also great off road truck trails and dual sport motorcycle trails nearby. One of the loops there has flush toilets and one of the loops has pit toilets. The cool thing is though, the one with pit toilets also has big awesome grills you can actually use a flat top in addition to the grilling portion. So, I like Oak Grove. A lot. I'd also like to give a shout out to Rick the campground host. He's been there for about 10 years and he's always super helpful and very friendly.

Quiet and shaded

Great little spot. Pulled in on a Sunday and there was no one around. The sites we're well spaced out and the trees added good shade.

semi-private, not many hikes

This campsite has semi-private sites which are nice, but they are overrun with ants. It's the most I've seen at any campground. Not a lot of hikes in the area, but there's wine tasting a short drive up the road. The campground host was very nice.

Perfect Weekend Getaway

This campsite is located just a short drive from Temecula, campsites are well cared for, clean bathrooms, and some sites have great California oak tree cover. Highly recommend for testing gear before going somewhere more secluded or for kids still learning the ropes.

Nice and relaxing

After my training seminar at the Mataguay Scout Ranch, I wanted to have a nice night enjoying an adult beverage. This site was down the road and it was beautiful. The sites are level and the month I stayed, a lot of beautiful flowers were in bloom. Site 46 is at the back of the campground and there is a nice creek behind it. I sat in my chair at dusk and saw bats and a huge owl. I was in a tent, for RV's there are no hook ups. The toilets are flush toilets and there is a water spigot for each site. There are a couple of group campsites with huge BBQ pits.
