Life on Mars

Absolutely amazing free dispersed camping at Silurian dry lake bed.

Visited in late December, and there were zero other campers out on the lake bed. Lots of entrances to the site from the highway, just be sure to follow an already made path. The farthest you can camp is about a mile off of the road. Very level, great place for boondocking.

This is BLM managed land, make sure to go online for a free fire permit if you plan to have a campfire.

Nice if you’re visiting the lake

Cold and empty in the wintertime. Nice place to stop for dump & fill if you’re in a nearby campground. Self service registration and one bathroom for the Upper Campground.

Breathtaking Boondocking

The entrance point from Route 169 is at grid coordinates 36.4817952, -114.4542310.

Easy to find with coordinates, pretty good cell service.

Super windy, especially if you park by the ledge. Very rocky ground, rocks varying in size up to football size. Careful!

Stunning park, okay campground

You’re in Yosemite. The park alone is worth 5 stars for sure!

The campground was more than half closed due to Covid restrictions in April 2021, and even with less than half capacity it was still crowded.

Close to the Valley Loop Trail and Yosemite Village, which has a general store and snacks.

Peaceful days, party nights

A really nice drive along the river takes you right to this campsite.

Some parts of the campground were very quiet, some parts were busier. If your site is close enough to the water, you’ll hear frogs and critters at night which I loved.

Close to lots of recreation and activities places to rent river accessories.

Spacious site, quiet campground

Double fee site was very spacious. Lots of coyote howls at night that would wake us up.

We went in December, most of the vegetation was brown and crunchy. Not very many other folks at the campground, which is how we like it.

A little closed off in the winter

Absolutely beautiful campground. Super quiet neighbors, beautiful cabins available. Great bathrooms and showers. Pool and activities were closed in the winter. Pets allowed

Too loud, too hot and too close together.

Sweltering hot and the campsites are just too close together. Probably delightful in the fall or spring.

Too windy for a tent!

We’ve got a 9 person tent and it was impossible to set up at Jumbo Rocks in July. Beautiful campground!!

Friendly camp hosts!

Friendly and helpful camp hosts. Lovely view of the lake. Close by for easy access. Clean bathrooms!

Friendly camp host, close to the lake!

Beautiful campground. Well kept up by friendly camp hosts.

Clean bathrooms!

Quiet campground

Lovely little place! Super close to the lake, secluded up in the mountains.

Bring your friends, everyone else does

A party place in mid august. Lots of louder groups that were up late into the night.

Site 84 was technically approved for a trailer over 10 feet, but a serious squeeze to get our trailer and explorer to fit within the lines.

Some restrooms were closed, and the open ones were very crowded at night. No lights in the bathrooms.

Beautiful views, scenic byway and river driving in and around the campground.

Favorite campground in California

Absolutely spot on camping for tents, RVs or trailers!

Group spots are available as well. Some spots are close to a train which isn’t the best, but from a lot of spots you can hear or see the ocean.

There are some spectacular sites at this campground. Anything on the beach side is your best bet, otherwise you will get stuck by the train and highway, and that’s no fun for anyone.

Clean bathrooms and showers.

Absolutely magical

Quiet campground blanketed in shade from the most incredible trees.

Clean individual bathrooms!

I wouldn’t stay very long.

Campsite 10/11 are great if connected, with the only view in the place. Other sites are secluded but cornered off with not much view.

Bugs! Lots and lots of flies, wasps and mosquitos here. Keep your trash and cooking in your car to be safe, wasps will swarm quickly.

Pit toilets are at the top of the campground, full of flies and paper was empty.

Wildlife! You’ll see plenty of deer and tiny foxes at night scrambling for snacks.

Lovely drive up, no cell service.

Secluded sites, yes!

All sites seem to have very secluded picnic tables. Beautiful gloomy weather in August, the campground felt very empty and nicely spaced out.

Bathrooms are very nice and clean, but the hand dryers are very loud if your campsite is anywhere close to the restroom.

Loud vehicles from the dunes way into the night and early in the mornings.

Beautifully scenic area

Sprawling lush green hills? Can’t beat Chino Hills State Park.
The campground itself feels very close together and wide open compared to the space of the park. Gets loud at night if there are too many groups camping. No cell service. Super clean bathrooms and showers.

PET OWNERS BEWARE: Our dog munched on a frog at this campsite and started foaming at the mouth. We rinsed her mouth out with water and she turned out fine, but a smaller dog or a swallowed frog and she could have died from toxicity.
