Accessible via a three-mile gravel road from Highway 14, Gunner Pool Recreation Area operates as a first-come, first-served campground with 27 sites spread across three distinct sections within the Ozark National Forest. The winding Forest Service Road 1102 requires careful navigation but remains manageable for campervans and smaller RVs, though large rigs should avoid this destination entirely.
The campground divides into three areas: sites near the actual pool suitable for car and tent camping, a wooded loop accommodating various camping styles, and creek-bottom sites accessed by dirt road. Most sites include picnic tables, fire rings, lantern poles, and designated tent pads. "This is a beautiful wooded campground; clean and very well maintained," reports Fred S., who found site #3 nearly level for his campervan. Vault toilets serve each section, and potable water flows from central spigots when operational.
North Sylamore Creek runs alongside the campground, creating the blue-green pool formed by an old CCC-built dam. Swimming opportunities abound, with multiple access points along the creek. The North Sylamore Creek Trail connects directly from the campground, offering hiking access to a 50-plus mile trail network. Some sites back directly to the water, while others face dense forest suitable for hammock camping.
Road conditions vary seasonally, with washboard surfaces and steep curves common. Cell service remains spotty throughout the area. "What struck me most was how quiet it was," notes Lee D. during an October visit. Parts of the campground face flash flood risk during heavy rains. For additional camping options, see campsites near Ozark National Forest or the nearby Blanchard Springs Recreation Area — Ozark St. Francis National Forests. Stock up on supplies beforehand, as the nearest significant town sits over 15 miles away.
