Dust clouds from passing vehicles and the distant yip of coyotes mark the rhythm of life along Plomosa Road, where dispersed camping stretches for seven miles across open desert terrain. This Bureau of Land Management area sits about five miles north of Quartzsite, far enough from Interstate 10 to escape highway noise but close enough for regular supply runs to town.
The camping area extends on both sides of Plomosa Road, with dirt tracks branching off into the desert as far as vehicles can navigate. Campers spread out across the landscape, with most maintaining considerable distance between rigs. RvNaut notes the area "runs along either side of Plomosa Road for 7 miles and extends out from the road farther than you can get to in a vehicle." During peak winter months, particularly around the RTR event, the area fills with RVers, though space remains available for those willing to venture further from the main road.
Cell service proves reliable for most carriers, with AT&T users reporting 2-3 bars and successful hotspot connections even during crowded periods. The area accommodates big rigs on level sites, though some secondary roads require higher clearance vehicles. A camp host monitors the entrance area near Highway 95, and the 14-day limit applies throughout the zone. "Exploring the desert and rockhounding thru old mines is perfect from this road," reports Jayne N., who spent six months boondocking in various locations.
Mountain views extend in multiple directions, with sightlines reaching tens of miles across the desert landscape. The area attracts winter visitors seeking free camping with easy access to Quartzsite's RV services, including dump stations, water fills, and supplies. Road traffic remains light, typically quieting by evening hours.
This dispersed camping area works well for self-sufficient RVers comfortable with boondocking who want proximity to Quartzsite's amenities without the crowds and noise of closer sites around Quartzsite.
