Free Range Boondocking
This is a fully Boondock situation, and my 4 stars reflects that category. This is one of 5 dispersed areas around Quartzsite for the "2 week stay" folks. This area, "Plomosa Road Dispersed BLM Camping", is about 5 miles north of downtown Quartzsite, and more important, far enough away from Interstate 10 to not be able to hear it. The other 4 areas will subject you to a lot of highway noise.
This area runs along either side of Plomosa Road for 7 miles and extends out from the road farther than you can get to in a vehicle. While there is some road traffic, it is mostly sparse and it all goes quiet by 7 to 8 pm. Coyotes were yipping up a storm the other night. There are mountains in almost every direction and the line of site extends out to 10s of miles.
There are no services. No water. Closest services are Quartzsite, 6.5 miles as the crow flies from my spot.
Dust - It will be dusty. You will also encounter a few folk on their 4-wheeler buggies that seem oblivious to the dust clouds they raise, and it just adds to the challenge. Most people moving vehicles down the dirt tracks do go very slow as to not kick up such a cloud.
There is a host on duty at the beginning of the road off of AZ-95. There other 2 weeks areas I was in didn't seem to have anyone monitoring.
As free range desert boondocking goes, this is the better of the 5 local areas. I also rank this area on it being desert, not mountains… I am sure that there are 4 star mountain areas that are much better than this area.
