    Overview

Dogtown Lake offers a scenic setting convenient to Grand Canyon National Park and the cities of Williams and Flagstaff, Arizona. The campground is situated in a pine forest along the shore of a small and scenic lake. Visitors come here to hike, fish, mountain bike and explore the area's cultural and natural history. It's also a great place to relax and enjoy the sound of the wind in the pines and the spectacular view of nearby Bill Williams Mountain.

    Recreation

Campers are drawn to the area's hiking and fishing opportunities. The lake is stocked with trout, crappie and channel catfish. Visitors can enjoy a guided nature trail near the lake and a hiking trail that leads to a scenic overlook of the area from the top of nearby Davenport Hill. The calm waters are inviting for canoes, kayaks and electric motorboats. Single motors of one horsepower or less are permitted.

    Natural Features

Kaibab National Forest is nestled on the Colorado Plateau, an area of land that was uplifted by geologic processes. Dogtown Lake sits at an elevation of 7,050 feet. The lake got its name from the extensive prairie dog "towns" that once covered open areas near the lake. In spite of the name, this medium-sized body of water is surrounded by trees. Summer temperatures range from 50 degrees at night to 80-90 degrees during the day. Summer thunderstorms, known as the monsoon, can build up quickly, especially during July and August. Snow is common from December through March.

    Nearby Attractions

Grand Canyon National Park's South Rim is just over one hour north of the campground. The cities of Williams and Flagstaff have amenities such as shops, restaurants and cultural and historic sites. From canyons to prairies, peaks to plateaus, Kaibab National Forest offers layers of opportunity for peace, solitude and discovery. Over 300 miles of trails, some clinging to the rims of the Grand Canyon, allow visitors to step off the beaten path into uncrowded landscapes.

Happy Endings Retreat is an amazing place to relax and enjoy nature! Off the beaten path and out of cell phone range, you can truly get “away from it all” here! The property is just 10 miles from beautiful Lake Pleasant and in the thick of prime hiking and miles of UTV roads. Do you prefer quieter activities? Contemplate nature in Hell’s Vinyard – where we have begun the process of renovating the 100-year-old vines or just sit by the pool. We are working hard to create a place for others to retreat and escape the city. Owners Kevin & Scott have been best friends for years and when this property came up, they knew it would be a great fit for two creative movie producers who love camping, hiking, and shooting. They are dedicated to developing Happy Endings Retreats’ 100 acres as an affordable place for people to enjoy the outdoors. You are sure to enjoy yourself and you won’t believe the view!

    lots of amenities

go-karts, play areas, ‘trampoline’, hiking trails, pets, under the trees, Indoor pool and spa, activities, snack bar, laundry, store. low water pressure for sewer clean out though. right now due to fire restrictions can only use propane for fires, bbq and ground. close to Bearizona, Williams. great for camping and ‘glamping’

Close to I-17 but very nice

The boss lady and I are full time and have stayed here multiple times. The staff and park are always amazing. The sites are level and most have a nice layer of rock on them.  There is an awesome pool and clubhouse, pickle ball courts, playgrounds and trails to explore. You are only 10 minutes from Cottonwood 30 minutes from Sedona 30 minutes to Prescott and an hour and a half to Phoenix. Passport America gets you 6 days at about $20 a night. Verizon and AT&T work awesome here. The laundry works on an app on your phone so no quarters to carry. Only downside is I-17 is way to close constant road noise when you're outside.

    Great community

Huge and fun camp! We were there for three nights to visit Sedona. They have a good pool (Fri & Sat you have to reserve a one hour time slot). There are a lot of permanent and full time campers there...all of them are really nice...always waving and generally smiling.

They have a lot of amenities that you could just spend a day staying at the resort and never get board ...hiking, river access, pool, min golf, etc.

We stayed in the A section. We had a nice spot and an easy walk to the pool. Next time we want to check out the H section as they seem to have more trees and less light at night.

Next tome we will do our best to get there as early as possible (noon is the earliest to check in)...as the spots are first come/first serve. At registration they will give you a map and highlight which spots are open. It can be tough to decide which section to focus on and which spot to pick but overall there will likely be a decent flat spot that you’ll have.

As far as COVID...this is a great place. All staff wore masks. They had precautions in place...and people would also keep their social distance. Outside of the camp...Cottonwood had some areas where people would not wear masks (ie walmart) and there was a major fall festival in Prescott that we drove by that was jam packed with people not wearing masks. Sedona, on the other hand, was pretty good about safety precautions and measures.

Last note — the other reviews are right about the traffic circles leading up to the resort and the very low and heavily enforced speed limits on the resort itself. While it took about 15-20 minutes to get out of the resort and on the road to Sedona...neither the speed limit or the oddity of the traffic circles had any negative impacts on our vacation.

    Our favorite Thousand Trails campground!

This place is huge! Nestled in the red rock country of Arizona, this Thousand Trails campground offers a scenic and tranquil escape. The sites are well-spaced, and the amenities include a pool, hot tub, 2 dog parks, hiking trails, river access and clubhouse. Its proximity to Sedona, Jerome and local wineries makes it an excellent choice for those seeking relaxation and exploration.

    Revamping in progress

The campground is being totally overhauled. It looks great so far and the facilities are very clean and nice. there is a nice big pool. the major thing missing are trees for shade and some privacy. there are only a few spots with nice big trees, all other sites have nothing. Which is OK in the Arizona winter, but not when it is still hot.

We were here when it as really slow, not sure what it will like when the campground is full.

    Beautiful Thousand Trails RV Resort

The Thousand Trails Verde Valley RV Resort is a lovely Thousand Trails RV park located in Cottonwood, Arizona in the Verde Valley. The park is very well-kept and maintained and the staff is friendly and helpful. The premium sites are unbelievably huge in size and have upgraded FHU. The views from them are worth the extra $5-7.50 per night alone! They are level and gravel which makes parking a dream! The amenities here include pool, sauna, community room, shuffleboard, volleyball, basketball, tennis, mini golf, hiking trails, game room, pool tables, horseshoes, ping pong, dog runs, etc. The park is located just down the road from Cottonwood and the historic downtown district. There is a lot of things to do nearby including hiking trails, wineries and vineyards, shopping, historical sites, state parks and more! The only downside we have found to this park is the Wifi. Our signals have been pretty spotty here. This is definitely one of the nicer Thousand Trails parks we’ve been to and we will certainly be back. 👍🏻

    Central location

This RV park is in the heart of all the fun in Cottonwood. Close to the river, old town cottonwood, tuzigoot national monument, Sedona, Jerome, and Dead Horse State Park. This RV park has it all, bathrooms, laundry, and full hookups. It seems to mostly cater to long term renters, so if your just passing through or looking to camp I would look elsewhere

    Nice RV park

Pros: polite staff, clean bathrooms, full hook ups, close to Sedona. Cons: right off the highway so you can hear the traffic

My only complaint was that there wasn’t enough lighting throughout the park so it was hard to find the bathroom once it got dark. Otherwise it was a convenient and pleasant stay.

    Great stay

We stayed almost a week here and our spot had a tree with nice shade. Level easy set up, full hookups and a cement pad out our front door. The staff was friendly the bathroom and laundry was spotless. We had a full moon that week and hiked up the hill to their observation deck on hat overlooked cottonwood and had views of Mingus Mountain and Jerome. Easy shot up 89a to Sedona. Great stay!

    Clean, great host

Basic, but really clean. Xlnt bathrooms. Host is superb. Makes it worth the price which is a little steep. Not much to do at the actual site but good location to get to lots of things and places. You’ll want a vehicle (besides your rig obviously). This is less a ‘hang out at the campsite’ kind of place. We’d come back. Our dog says two paws up.

    Awesome little park!

Awesome little park! Set in the middle of everything just about... a short drive to national monuments, Sedona, Jerome and loads of great local food! The park is managed by an extremely helpful guy named Paul who also gave us a fire pit and free fire wood to help us celebrate our honeymoon! We were in spot 59 which is by the river and secluded somewhat, although it can be tricky getting in and out of! Tons of wildlife plays around the river with humming birds and other beautiful little creatures! One of the best little parks we’ve visited

    Great RV park & location

We loved Rio verde Rv park - close to Sedona but a fraction of the cost of the Rv parks there. We were able to stay for a few nights and took our motorcycle into Sedona to explore. We are full time in our motorhome so we enjoyed having access to the clean bathrooms & showers. It’s right by the river and great for cold plunges :) easy access sites with full hookups. There is a bit of road noise but nothing some ear plugs can’t help with.

Helpful staff, clean rest rooms and laundry. Our site was near the river with full hook ups. Down side: on state highway, some noise. We don’t tow a car so we use bikes and walking. Both seemed dicey with cars moving fast close by. Cottonwood is a fun place about four miles away.

The nicest and most accommodating staff EVER

The people who manage this park could run Disneyland. Very friendly and helpful. The amenities of the park are very good. Full hookups, laundry, WiFi and ice available. The down side is, the trees are few and so is the shade. We were here in November, but I could see this place getting HOT in August. It has been reported the park is near a major highway, but our spot at the back of the park is very quiet. These folks are super dog friendly. Will definitely be staying here again.

    Thousand Trails Verde Valley

Cozy little camp spot along the Verde River

My goal was to find a nice tent spot nestled in between Cottonwood and Sedona, and along the Verde River for easy canoe access. Upon driving onto the property we were greeting by a very friendly gatekeeper who wished us a great stay and suggested spots for canoeing and exploring the area.

We were happy to find that the resort had a lovely pool and jacuzzi, (perfect after a day of adventuring or traveling) warm, cozy bathrooms after sleeping in a tent site in 50 degrees, and large clean campsites, many of them with trees and many close enough to hear the Verde River water down below. Being unable to get to the river from our campsite was our only disappointment. We stayed in the "A" section, which has tent and pop-up spots around rows of their mini cabins and RV spots. We were initially worried about the noise from all of the RV's, being more of the backwoods camping sorts, but the entire place is very calm and quiet.

A short walk across what the property will find you at Alcantara Winery. It was the perfect place to end our day of exploring the area. I'd certainly come back to the park in the future.

    nice RV site.. great amenities

50amp sites a narrow and mostly taken by full timers so plan on using a 30 amp. site. they are all gravel sites with picnic tables and grill. ask of the grass sites. they are close to the pool and seem nicer. amenities are great-pool, hot tub, club house, mini golf, off leach dog area. only down fall was fire ants. with the lake of rain in the area they ants were all over. the river is nice a small hike from the camp. great fishing area we’d go back in the fall or spring to hot in the summer

    Thousand Trails Verde Valley

    Not as expected.

Came out for some camping, hiking, and fishing with the extended family. Wasn’t much of any of this at this campground.

Camping area was without any shade and made up only a few square meters of the complex. Site caters to the RV crowd, which is just fine as some of our group was looking for this and others rented a nice little cabin along the river. Only problem was that the facility was overrun with the annual crowd, which spent more time glaring and sneering, than minding their own. A few nice souls about, but more of the bitter old timers.

Hiking trails were advertised, but they were short and combined to less than 3km. Many were partial trails as they are undercutting them to add more RV parking. Hiking along the river is possible with the gate code you can get from an employee, but it is overgrown and not suited for small children.

Fishing is possible with a hike of less than a 1km and following the wash makes this a good morning activity for the entire family. A friendly resident was kind enough to hike the trail with us, showing us the waterfalls and fishing holes.

The facilities themselves, were actually quite nice. As expected from a retirement complex, there were daily activities, pool, billiards, shuffle board, and a Wi bowling league. Plenty of coffee, clean restrooms, free WiFi, and friendly staff were to be found every morning at the main lodge. Well maintained roads, cabins, and grassy areas(marked common areas, but locals claim them as their own and attack like rabid dogs if you walk on them), made the place acceptable.

    Thousand Trails Verde Valley

Outdoor living with all the amenities

Stayed here for two weeks. This campground is nestled behind some hills right next to the Verde River. It’s a beautiful setting with a huge variety of sites. There’s a mix of full timers and daily/weekly visitors. The entire staff is very friendly and helpful. I can’t say we met a bad neighbor either, and most were super nice people.

We stayed near the pool lodge. The pool and hot tub were very clean. There is a horseshoe pit, tennis courts, and basketball courts that didn’t seem to get much use. Still, nice to have for people staying longer term.

The only irritation I had was the speed limits. I understand the reasoning, but getting in and out of the park was a pain just because it took so long to drive 5-10 mph for 1-2 mile stretches. Most of that drive is through uninhabited areas, but I think Thousand Trails is just covering their rears for liability sake.

Oh, and internet is almost non-existent. I had a T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon phone, and all were pretty much worthless most of the time. We paid $15 for a week of WiFi, but ended up asking for a refund as it was even more unusable than our phones. Still, you can only ask so much from a campsite when it gets far enough off the grid.

So, overall a great experience, and would definitely love to stay there again in the future.

    Thousand Trails Verde Valley

    Tent and small trailer paradise

This is part of the Encore/Thousand Trails network (although anyone can use it).  They do offer a 20% military discount.

The resort has spacious RV spots with extra room to park your vehicle(if towing). Each spot has a nice concrete slab with a picnic table. The Small trailer, tent camping sites are very big and have a lot of distance between them. Staff are always patrolling around keeping everything nice and clean. Trees are everywhere providing shade. A nice breeze is always blowing and there is a creek down behind the resort where you can cool off. if you're looking for a great relaxing place to stay I highly recommend it.

Close by is Jerome and Sedona for things to do
