Cottonwood Campground — Roper Lake State Park

It is a beautiful view of the mountains

Sadly, there is construction going on in the park right now. It is windy and cold. The sites are pretty private and there are nice picnic table covers. Unfortunately, the dump station is closed for a while.

    Quiet, well maintained state park

This is our second time staying here and they have started doing some upgrades to the park. New dump station and some new bathrooms and shower houses. We stayed in the Hacienda loop both times. I like this loop better because it doesn’t seem as crowded as the other loops. Sites are well spaced and level. Nice hiking trails around the lake also where you can fish. Very close to Safford and Thatcher that have a great number of stores.

    Quick Night by the Gila

The road in turns to dirt for a brief minute, then back to paved. It winds and there are some tight turns. You turn off the pavement to dirt the last 1/4 mile. Wouldn’t take anything over 35’ 5th wheel. $5/night is not bad to have vault toilets, water spigot, picnic tables, river close. Biking trails, horse trails, hike trails, OHV trails all close. There are corrals at the “Host” site. There is a boat ramp 2 miles before the campground. There is one farther up also. Not sure about at the campground. No Verizon signal here.

Nice place to pull over for the night

We came in after dark, but the roads were clear and it was easy to set up. Quiet.

    Nice RV Park

Nice CG for our overnight stay. Plenty of amenities. Guy in the office was very helpful. Level gravel spots, FHUs were in good order. Road noise from I-10 and trains on the Southrn Pacific - not a bother for us. We would stay here again.

    Beautiful little lake

This campground is well maintained. It is on roper lake. They have cabins that overlook the lake and plenty of camping spots for both tints and rvs. They also have a day use area with a designated swimming area and lots of picking tables

    Good location

It’s dry camping only meeting no water and put toilet. There are 12 sites with tables, fire pit, and barbecue reasonably level. Why a good location, because it’s between catwalk national recreational trail and the ghost town called Magpllon town

Cottonwood Campground — Roper Lake State Park

    Well maintained, great hiking

We found the ranger to be very helpful in terms of outdoor activities (hiking, fishing, etc.) The park has great spaces for tent campers and big rigs, with electricity for 30 and 50 amp campers. They also have several cabins right on the lake.

Our spot had a picnic table and was right beside the beach. There is a great hike only minutes from the campground where you can see Mt. Graham.

The bathrooms, showers, and sinks were all well maintained. Also, the spot is great for stargazing.

We are looking forward to returning. The town of Safford is charming and has some nice restaurants too.

    Checked out campsite

Went and checked out campsite. Was certainly hot. Little bit of walk to river but not bad. Was post monsoon weather. River was flowing fast and looked like chocolate. A lot of side roads for 4x4, quads etc. The Bonita creek drive is gorgeous and provides creek water you can get in. Was a beautiful escape and very green post rain.

    Sandy but a getaway

The bathrooms were a little outdated but that didn’t take away from how well kept the bathrooms were. Especially when I got there after hours. The water pressure for the shower in the bathroom was decent. It was a darker lot, which I’m not mad about because I don’t like sun beaming in the camper anyways. Made a reservation with a man on the phone, he was very nice. Came after hours & had no problem with it. The “dog park” isn’t the best of the KOAs I’ve been to.. but it’s better than nothing. If I was passing through, I’d stay again. & also, the pool wasn’t filled. Not sure why..

    Good RV Park

We stayed the night. Arrived around 11:00. The office is split hours with morning and afternoon. We arrived during the break. Check in was like after hours. Our site was listed and a map was provided. We stopped by the office at 2:00 when the afternoon shift was there. Got the customary sheet/map with door codes and WiFi password. The pool was closed, but hey..... it’s very early spring. Our site had 30 amp service (was listed as 50 amp I believe). Not a problem in March. The WiFi was excellent, the cable has 40 some channels, the provided paper only listed 20 stations. But our Firestick and their WiFi.... we survived. :-) Full hookups, all in good condition. Gravel parking sites. We tried to find something interesting but it’s Lordsburg. We did eat lunch at a very nice diner in town Kranberrys Chattwrbox,

    Convenient

This KOA is a convenient pit stop when crossing Southern New Mexico on Rt. 10. The gravél covered acre has been nicely landscaped around the perimeter. Road noise from the highway is heavy. The very clean shower dressing area was barely big enough to turn around in. All amenities are available including propane, which was served up by a grumpy technician.

It’ll be nice when New Mexico opens its’ State Parks to camping again so touring the State becomes possible.

    Near the CDT

Tucked in behind a small neighborhood just off I-10. We'll placed signs direct you to the campground, just in case you think you're in the wrong area. Depending on the time of year, there may be some snow on the ground. This campground is in great proximity to the Continental Divide Trail, if that's your thing.

    Easy on off interstate 10

Nice campground convenient about half way between Tucson and El Paso for us. Campground was very easy in and out, town is declining but appears safe, sheriff vehicle just in front of campground. Campground was close to 10 but not to bad noise wise. We had a very scenic drive up into mountains to silver city, cute old town, we passed through Gila national forrest , it's about 45 miles, but a very easy nice drive on very good roads. I would stay here again passing through, only 3 channels on air tv, but they have included cable of about 20 channels. This campground is very close or in the dust bowl area, but was not bad while we were there and it was a little windy. Enjoyed our stay.

Cottonwood Campground — Roper Lake State Park

    Desert Terrain with Moutain View

There is plenty to do at Roper Lake. Great spots for RVs, tents, and cabins too. This is a popular area so get your reservations in early. The lake was low in December and it was windy and cold, but we made the best of it and enjoyed the views of snow capped Mt. Graham. Campground was clean and very dog friendly. They have a dog park. The have a junior ranger program... fun for the little ones! We did notice that many weren’t following covid protocol in bathrooms and around the campsite. But we had no problem social distancing and keeping to ourselves, even with our loop completely full. We felt safe and comfortable. Your stay also includes access to Dankworth Pond State Park, a 10 min drive down the road. The pond is small, but you’ll catch more fish here. There are also great educational hiking paths with information & replicas of tribal villages. Worth the drive!

Cottonwood Campground — Roper Lake State Park

    Too crowded and noisy

The sites are close together and there were so many people playing loud music and running ATVs. There is an observatory nearby and it seemed like few people respected the rules about nighttime light pollution. The lake is beautiful and I would consider going back for a day trip, but would not camp there again.
