Free dispersed camping in Tonto National Forest comes with a catch here: a gated entrance that requires a permit and combination code obtained in advance from the Forest Service. Getting that code online before arrival is essential. Without it, campers have found themselves locked in overnight. Sites are on the smaller side, with room for roughly two tents or a trailer up to about 19 feet, and the access roads include large potholes and rocky sections that demand high-clearance vehicles. A 4x4 is strongly recommended.
The terrain opens up toward views of the Superstition Mountains' Flatirons formation, with tall saguaros visible throughout the area. Bulldog Canyon sits within an OHV zone, so ATV and off-road vehicle traffic runs through regularly, especially on weekends. Derek A. sums up the draw: "Get the permit to Bulldog Canyon and hit the trails off roading." Weekday visits tend to be noticeably quieter, with more site availability and less engine noise. Goldfield Ghost Town is a short drive away, and Goldfield Ghost Town Dry Camping provides an alternative base if this area is full.
Campers new to the area can also check dispersed camping near Tonto National Forest to compare nearby options. Campfires are permitted, pets are welcome, and cell service is generally available. First-timers should park in the lot near the gate and walk in to scout site availability before committing a trailer to the rough interior roads.
