The gravel road stretches three miles across flat BLM desert before reaching the KOFA National Wildlife Refuge boundary, offering dispersed camping with strong cell signal from a nearby tower. Campers find abundant space to spread out on the desert pavement, with room between sites and mountain views in multiple directions. Greg L. notes this area provides "pure free boondocking, no water, no trash cans, no toilets."
The location sits five minutes east of Highway 95, just north of the border patrol checkpoint, making it convenient for travelers heading toward Mexico. Traffic noise carries from the highway but remains in the background. Campers report the area stays relatively quiet, especially for those who drive three-quarters of a mile in from the main road. Tiny red cacti dot the landscape, requiring attention when walking around camp.
Cell coverage reaches five bars throughout most of the camping area, though signal weakens deeper into the wildlife refuge behind ridgelines. The flat terrain accommodates larger RVs, and the lack of vegetation provides wide open views for stargazing. Hikers can explore trails extending into the surrounding desert and refuge lands. For additional camping options in the region, campers can check campsites near BLM Land — Yuma Field Office or visit nearby KOFA National Wildlife Refuge - King Valley Road six miles southeast.
