Primitive dispersed camping spreads across 665,000 acres of Sonoran Desert landscape within this national wildlife refuge. Campers select their own sites anywhere on refuge lands, with no designated spots, facilities, or fees required. The terrain varies from accessible gravel roads to technical 4WD routes that demand high clearance vehicles.
Palm Canyon Road provides the most accessible entry point, where regular passenger cars can reach pullout areas for tent camping. More adventurous campers with trucks or SUVs can explore deeper into the refuge via Queen Canyon Road or King Road, though these routes become increasingly rough and narrow. "We are in 23 ft rv and took main road in," reports Danny T., noting that RVs should avoid the technical canyon roads but can find suitable spots along the main access routes.
Cell coverage varies significantly by location, with some areas receiving three bars while remote canyon sites have no service. Water and restrooms are not available anywhere in the refuge. Campers regularly encounter desert bighorn sheep, and the area attracts visitors with dirt bikes and UTVs exploring old mining roads. Summer temperatures exceed 115 degrees, making October through March the recommended camping season.
Nearby options include Crystal Hill for crystal hunting enthusiasts. Bring multiple five-gallon water containers and prepare for completely self-sufficient camping in true desert wilderness conditions.
