Hikers heading to Palm Canyon's rare native fan palms will find free dispersed camping strung along the gravel road that leads to the trailhead, roughly 12 miles from Quartzsite. The first three miles off Highway 95 fall within BLM jurisdiction, where campers can spread out without a 100-foot road restriction. Past that boundary, the road enters Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, where the same road continues but camping must stay within 100 feet of the road. No water, toilets, or designated sites exist anywhere along the corridor, so self-sufficiency is required.
Site selection comes down to a simple trade-off: lower spots tend to be flatter, while positions higher up the road give open sightlines toward the surrounding mountains. Daytime traffic from day hikers heading to the trailhead is noticeable but generally limited to daylight hours. Wind picks up during the day and settles after dark. Cell coverage is workable, with multiple reviewers confirming usable signal on both T-Mobile and Verizon. A dump station and water fill are available roughly 20 minutes north on Highway 95.
A kit fox has wandered through at least one camp, and wildlife sightings are a recurring theme in reviews. Lisa F. notes that "lots of dispersed camping all along the road to the trailhead" means crowding is rarely a problem even when the area is busy. The 14-day limit applies, though BLM and Refuge rules differ slightly on reset requirements. Campers wanting a different setup nearby can look at Palm Canyon Road Dispersed Camping (BLM) or Palm Canyon Road Dispersed — Kofa NWR for adjacent options along the same corridor.
Description
Camping on public lands away from developed recreation facilities is referred to as dispersed camping. Most of the remainder of public lands are open to dispersed camping, as long as it does not conflict with other authorized uses or in areas posted "closed to camping," or in some way adversely affects wildlife species or natural resources.
Dispersed camping is generally allowed on public land for a period not to exceed 14 days within a 28 consecutive day period. Camping limitation rules vary per office, please check with your local office for details on camping limitations. In addition, campers must not leave any personal property unattended for more than 10 days (12 months in Alaska). Campsite Selection
Dispersed camp sites are located along most secondary roads and may not be marked. Popular locations can be recognized by the telltale flat disturbed area that has been used as a camp site before. Not all flat spots are sites. If possible, please use existing sites to avoid creating new disturbances. To further protect your public lands, campers must not dispose of any refuse, hazardous materials, sewage, or in any manner pollute the surrounding area.
Reservation Info
Using exploding targets, fireworks, tracer ammunition, paper/sky lanterns, and other incendiary devices is prohibited year-round on all BLM-managed public land in Arizona.
States may have additional requirements or restrictions for dispersed camping. Please see Regional Information before planning your trip.
