Best RV Parks & Resorts near Elmendorf Air Force Base, AK

Right off the Highway this RV park is not bad.  Although I prefer my camping more rural.  If you are visiting and just want to start one way out of Anchorage this could be a choice for you.  With everything from cabins, to full RV hook ups, to dry RV camping, and lakeside tent spots this is a good option for a first stop on a great Alaska adventure.    Because of it’s proximity to Anchorage, Wasilla, and Palmer you are not far from anything.  There is good cell and internet service here as well and stores to get everything you need.  Spaces are close to each other and I would not recommend spending my entire camping trip there, but they are a good option if you need something close.   Cell Service: Yes Internet: Yes Distance from Anchorage: Bug Factor (1 minimal to 10 too many to enjoy): 45 miles

Stayed 2 nights on labor day weekend. Very cool spot. All campsites were pull through. Facilities were nice and well maintained. Full hook ups. Only bad thing was a ton of wasps. Spotted 4 giant nests within 200 ft of my camp spot otherwise great

Nice place to take the kiddos. Right off the parks Hwy before the Big Lake turn off.

We chose #8 a beachfront site. #7 is wider for anyone trying to decide which one. There is a older swing set for smaller kids to play on and there are kayaks, canoes, & paddle boats for rent. A fire pit and wood table provided at each site.

You do hear noise from the Highway and it looks like there are some long term residents that were running their generators consistently.

Owner is very nice to work with and will bring you a wheel barrel of fire wood for $15.

The RV park was full so we parked at the overflow lot. Gorgeous view but loud from traffic. We made it work.

Granite creek is a great stop in between Anchorage Alaska and anywhere else south.

I only gave it a four stars because tent users must place there tent on gravel or pavement and not dirt so they can regrow the dirt areas.. As I know how important this is.. we had tents.. Not at all comfortable even with pads under us. So if you are an RV or camper trailer you are in luck!

Camp sites are spacious and have a fire pit and table. There is also plenty of trees and vegetation between camping spaces so you feel far away.

You can reserve a spot and I would recommend this if you plan on camping in the months of late June, or July.. as fishing season is truly a season here in Alaska and camp sites are golden. Water pumps and state bathrooms are here. Anytime you can get a toilet and paper in the woods is a plus :)

We use this campsite every August as a "Going back to school Celebration" for parents or a " Last hang out of summer" for the kids. The paved loop offers good space for biking, throwing a ball or side walk chalk and you can bring your choice of boat to fish or float in the lake. ( Remember if you fish in Alaska you need a fishing license ages 16+)

You get an amazing view of kenai mountains here and your typical Alaskan wildlife.. magpie, moose, eagle and sometimes bear.. although we have never seen a bear here, I highly encourage bear safety. This includes keeping your camp clean, food in your car and carrying bear spray.

Dogs are allowed here and we have never been told to leash them.. we rarely see a camp host coming site to site except to check that you have paid properly.

Some sites border the kenai river which can run pretty vast, cold and hard, so if you so choose that site please be respectable of the water and its ways.

There is a fee for staying here around 14.00 and a lovely little ice cream parlor at the corner to tell your children that if they are good camping you for see ice cream in their future :)

This campground is on the edge of an ATV playground. With 26 campsites that are mostly pull through‘s there’s plenty of room for RVs pulling a TV trailers. The sign says that fees can be paid using the e-commerce option however there is no Jim Creek option on the website see her going to have to pay using the pay pipes. Cellphone service is decent, Internet service is spotty. Distance from Anchorage is 35 miles. The best sites are end sites closer to the bathrooms. 

This campground is nice, picturesque, and spacious. Lots of trees for privacy! We like it because it’s close to home and a town, so a morning trip to get coffee is not out of the question. I hear that at least one of the local pizza places delivers here too! (Haven’t tested that out personally.) Nice, paved, level campsites for RVs, and plenty of space to put a tent on softer ground.

Great to have a place so close to town just to stop for an overnight. Get there early for a spot on the weekends. Sites are small for the most part, better for RVs or a small tent. Some traffic noise throughout

This campground has all three warnings, sometimes.  There is a really nice boardwalk and the drive to this campground is great.  This is a smaller campground with only 12 sites that are not suitable for RVs.  If you are in an RV look at the williwaw campground instead.    It is centrally located between Anchorage and the Peninsula but has so many things to offer.  Trip through the Whittier tunnel is a definite.  If you are a hiker Byron glacier in good weather is decent hike.  If you have kids and even if you don’t then the Wildlife Conservation Center of Alaska is great way to get close to the biggest animals Alaska has to offer.   During the autumn and winter this campground is still open but not maintained.  Toilets may not be available so bring your own TP and prepare to pack out all your trach.   Cell Service: No Internet: No 2020 Cost: $14 Distance from Anchorage: 55 Bug Factor (1 minimal to 10 too many to enjoy): 5 if it gets sunny the bugs come out  

Not the best campground for RVs but wonderful for tents and small campers. Only about 10 sites that can be reserved online. Right against the lake so great for fishing, canoeing and kayaking. There's a small boat launch and swimming area with no lifeguard on duty. Trees between site, tables and fire rings at each site.

We stayed here twice in our travels on Alaska. First appearance, the grasses are overgrown at the “entrance” and i was concerned. The fee both looks abandoned. But we actually saw there were some beautiful camp sites. Nice size for rvs if all lengths. Our table needed some help and it is obvious the camp is not being maintained. The bathroom was clean. Some sites you can hear the river and some road noise. The river is beautiful. There is a dumpster but it is on an upper level next to the dump station which is closed. The first time we did not realize this and took our garbage with us. All in all, it is not a bad campground. The trees are beautiful. We also had a moose and calf hanging around. We came back for a second visit. We used it as a jumping off point for Anchorage. Also the Eagle Nature Center and its trails are amazing! Saw a bull moose there. Would use again if not super picky. We are camping folks! For $20 I would not complain.

Williwaw Campground near Portage Glacier is a must stay for those visiting Chugach National Forest. Located central to several hiking trails, salmon viewing, and 1.5mi from the visitor center. This campground offers large sites for RVs and tents alike. Picnic tables and fantastic fire pits at every site. Vault toilets and potable water available. We are looking forward to staying here again soon!
