Within State Patented lands, Kings River provides dispersed camping along the confluence of the Matanuska and Kings rivers. Managed by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, this drive-in and walk-in area accommodates big rigs and allows campfires, pets, and alcohol.
Multiple camping zones spread across the river confluence offer different experiences. The largest southwestern area sits on river gravel and dirt, accommodating at least a dozen rigs of any size with several riverfront spots. These open sites provide excellent conditions for Starlink and solar setups. The northwestern section features half a dozen sites mixed among trees, better suited for vans and smaller rigs due to heavy tree cover that limits solar and obstructs satellite signals. A smaller northeastern area works best for vans or compact units.
"As others have stated, multiple dispersed sites right by the Kingsriver," notes Erik I., who found shelter under the road bridge during persistent rain. Despite the proximity to the highway, road noise remains surprisingly minimal as the river sound and the below-grade position help buffer traffic sounds. The area also provides access to riding trails for those exploring on ATVs or motorcycles.
Campers can find additional places to camp near Sutton or check out King Mountain State Rec Area eight miles east. Most visitors use this spot for overnight stops rather than extended stays.
