Prairie Creek Campground is situated beneath moss-draped oaks on the banks of Woodruff Lake. The lake is part of the scenic Alabama River in the region's Black Prairie Belt. For sportsmen, the campground offers a wonderful opportunity to relax between fishing and hunting trips. Water sports and hiking are also popular activities.
Woodruff Lake offers excellent fishing for bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish. Boating, jet skiing and other water sports are big draws to the lake, and a boat ramp is provided for easy water access. The Lowndes Wildlife Management area, located nearby, covers 12,500 acres and provides prime hunting for whitetail deer, wild turkey, hogs and a variety of small game and waterfowl.
The Black Prairie Belt is characterized by rich, dark soils and a mosaic of rolling grasslands and dense hardwood and pine forests.

Level sites. 4 pull through with full hook ups for bigger rigs. This is a small campground, all sites have water and electricity with dump site as you leave camping area. Would give 5 stars if not for mosquitos and no-see-ums that came right through our RV screens. Even repellent didn't seem to stop them from biting on one particular evening, but the second day was better. We could see the lake from our site, which had full hook-ups even tho' sewer hook up wasn't mentioned on recreation.gov. Birders we traveled with enjoyed many sightings. Bathroom not immaculate but clean enough and had coin washer and dryer in pavilion.

We have stayed here many times when were on the road heading out for the summer. We had full hook up, a picnic table & there is a small clean restroom near the pool if needed along with a laundry room & place to sit inside if it's hot out. They have DVD's and some books we trade them where were there. We only stay a night & stay hooked up to the truck. The owners Gigi & her husband work hard to keep the gardens beautiful, the campground maintained & the pool is so clean & refreshing. You can get propane here.
We've stayed 3 different time & had a nice site towards the back with a garden on the side.
It's off the beaten path a little but well worth it.

Payne Lake East is primitive camping that costs $6 dollars a night. From here you can access the amenities on the west shore. We are here in mid February and all but one of the full hook up sites on the west side are occupied. However, on the east side there is only one other camper. The lake is very pretty and has an area for swimming and a boat launch. On the east side the water is shut off this time of year, but it is available at the dump station. The east side offers a pit toilet, picnic tables and lantern post at each site. Apparently there are alligators here, but they are seldom seen this time of year per the campground host. From I65S, take exit 205, turn left off ramp, turn left onto Bradberry Lane (between Whataburger & Peach Park), RV park on right by lighthouse (no signs).
GuideGunter Hill Park is a Corp of Engineers campground just outside of Montgomery, Alabama. Although we have not camped at many COE parks, I can't imagine any of them topping this one! Of the 142 sites, 1-75 are renovated with concrete pads and full hook-ups. We were there in February and the weather was a little wet & cold. Since it wasn't very crowded, only 1 area of campsites was open. Be aware if you're there during a string of heavy rain days as some low lying sites may become flooded. Our site backed up to a point where we could sit and watch the water. However, if we had stayed another day we would have been told to move as more rain was expected and the water levels were rising.
The bathrooms were very clean and well maintained. There were also a few hiking trails and nice paved roads for bikes. I did smell a paper factory in the air while we were there. I've also read that you can hear the race cars from the Montgomery Speedway during racing season from your campsite.
There was a lot to explore around the area as well. We went into Montgomery several times. I recommend checking out the AL Dept of History & Archives free museum. Its very well done and I learned a lot about Alabama. We also visited the Memorial for Peace & Justice along with the Legacy Museum. Both very well done and thought provoking.
For a different setting for a meal, check out the nearby Stockyard Grill. You can go in for a burger and leave with the whole cow!

When we arrived the grass was very tall. They did mow today. Just not my site as we were occupying it. It has full hook ups. Not very much shade. My site has none. The bathrooms are dirty. The pool is a nice size. It could use a vacuum. There is a decent size jungle gym at the playground. My 8 year old son has been having a great time playing with other kids there. There is a nice sized fenced in dog park. There is a swing to sit on. However, it’s all busted up and not usable. There is a nice sized pond. I haven’t been to it yet. There is supposed to be wifi. I don’t see the network when searching for it. We have our own hotspot. It runs on the t mobile network. Except, we don’t have a signal here. I haven’t met anyone who runs this place. Honestly if my son wasn’t having as much fun playing on the playground we would’ve left after the first night. We booked 3 nights as to break up our drive. I definitely wouldn’t stay here again.
RangerJust a quarter mile from I/65 south of Birmingham this place is all pull through, gravel, level with full hookups. Bath and showers are available. 35.00 per night it is great for an overnight stop.

This was a beautiful campground and very well taken care of. However, it was mostly set up for RVs and not for tent camping. Each site has plenty of space and a hookup. There are also central bathrooms and covered picnic benches that work well for groups. If you want to get out and do some hiking there are also trails around the park. Just remember it can get hot here in the summer so be prepared.

LegendDriving up to this campground, I almost turned around. But, getting here, I am so glad we didn't! Our site, #34 on the Catoma side, was perfectly level, easy to back in, and a lot of personal space between campers. The view is amazing! The water is right behind us! We have full hookups here, which makes it so easy. There is a small playground area for the kids and a bath house within walking distance.

Great time at Gunter Hill
Gunter Hill Corps of Engineers Campground We stayed 2 nights at Site 27 Full hookups (50 amp electric/water/sewer) $35/night Site #27. is a very long, back-in site, on a level concrete pad, very shady and secluded. The driveway is very long. The Catoma Creek is visible and a short walk just to the rear of this site, affording me quick and easy access to get to a bit of fishing.
The campground is just on the west side of Montgomery, a short drive off of the interstate, far enough away to offer plenty of peace and quiet. We enjoyed lots of walks around the park, getting familiar with the campground while exploring the Catoma loop and the more rustic, electric-only Antioc loop. We were able to put our kayaks in easily as well. The restrooms were slightly dated and dark. No trash pick up, but cans available nearby.
The campground served as a good base to explore nearby Montgomery and it’s suburbs.

TravelerWe are local (30ish miles) but love to just escape here when we have 3 or 4 days and don't want to travel long distance. Perfect spot to be closer to the river in the summer and in the woods in the fall. Catoma loop sites are full hookup with concrete pads including both back in and pull through options. Antioch Loop does not have sewer hookup and these sites are gravel lots but offer some amazing water views.
RangerGunter Hill was a nice COE campground. We had site 32 in the Catoma Loop (only loop open - we stayed at the end of January for one night). The sites are level and had full hookups. Our site had a good view of the lake, but I’m not sure you’d have that view once trees and underbrush have full leaves. Only disappointments were we had a strong sewage smell around our site when we first got there - the smell went away so maybe it was just the direction of the wind (the bath house is across the road). And when we walked through our woods behind our site to look at the lake, we were saddened to see tons of trash in the woods - made the pretty view of the lake a lot less appealing. We would stay here again for a one night, but probably not for a long stay.

Lovely rustic campground divided into two distinct loops, one feels like it’s from the 70’s ( w&e, no sewer) and the newer side that has full hookups for an additional $4 a day. Last time I was using ATT, and coverage was fair. This time I am on Visible with a WeBoost-and struggling to view presentations with any consistency. Be warned if this is a necessity. We love the campground and will be back

Fish from site #13. Only reason for 4 stars is no FHU’s. Be sure to try the food at Roebuck Landing restaurant (1 mile away).

There is a Piggly Wiggly, True Value Hardware, and Dollar stores. Approx 20-30 min to Walmart, next town over. Public lake for swimming, on site, with playground!
