Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Marion Junction, AL

Chilatchee Creek Campground provides spacious sites with water and electric hookups for campers traveling with pets. Dogs of all breeds are welcome at this US Army Corps of Engineers campground along the Alabama River, approximately 30 miles from Marion Junction. Reviews note the campground's large, well-spaced sites create a peaceful environment for pet owners seeking privacy while camping. Millers Ferry Campground also welcomes pets and features water access with a swimming area where well-behaved dogs can enjoy shoreline exploration. Both campgrounds offer picnic tables and fire rings at each site, with concrete pads that provide stable footing for pets and their owners. The partial dirt road leading to Chilatchee Creek shouldn't deter pet owners, as the quiet, secluded location offers excellent opportunities for wildlife watching with leashed dogs.

Trail access around these campgrounds provides ample walking opportunities for dogs, with multiple nature paths winding through wooded areas. Prairie Creek Campground, another pet-friendly option in the region, features courtesy docks at some waterfront sites where dogs can easily access the water. Campers should pack extra towels for muddy paws, especially after rain when the access roads can become slick. While camping with pets, visitors should be prepared for wildlife encounters including turtles and occasionally alligators in the water. The heavily wooded sites provide good shade during summer months, keeping pets comfortable during Alabama's hot weather. Most campsites require pets to remain leashed at all times, and owners should bring waste bags as dedicated pet waste stations are limited.

    Millers Ferry Campground

    Great RV Lakeside Park

Third time at Millers Ferry! Water & electric hook ups . Good water pressure, dump station on property. Our site was paved and easily accommodated our 40 ft Rv/ fifth wheel & Dooley. Each site has a fire ring/with top grate to grill, picnic table, shepherd hook.Bathroom clean another one under construction. Nice playground. $1 for washer and dryer. Lots of sites are gravel as well, but level. Lots of people fish-parking for trucks & trailers at water ramp on property. No dog park, but lots of nature walks and paved roads to walk on. Oh yes, Lots of mosquitoes & ants, bring bug spray for a more pleasant stay! Shopping in town about 15-20 minutes away. Several good restaurants. There is a Piggly Wiggly, True Value Hardware, and Dollar stores. Approx 20-30 min to Walmart, next town over. Public lake for swimming, on site, with playground!

    Kountry Air RV Park

    Great Experience

This review is based on a short-term versus destination campground (CG). When we made reservations, we were told to only take exit 179 off I-65 and follow the GPS directions, as any other way will take you on narrow roads, including gravel roads. We drove the 14 miles from the exit to the CG with no issues. We were greeted by Don on his golf cart, and his wife, Gigi, checked us in at the office. We received a great rundown of the local area, including restaurant suggestions that looked really good. Unfortunately, we were only overnighting here and did not have the chance to enjoy Prattville. We were led to pull through site A with FHUs. Getting to our site was a little narrow but very doable. The site was level and pleasantly spacious both at and between sites. The utilities are in the middle of the pad. We were able to position so we could get to both black tanks with a 10’ sewer hose. We got 2 bars on Verizon, and their WiFi was better than most CGs this size. Both Don and his wife came by at separate times to ensure we were settled in, to include asking if we needed propane. The CG is mainly full-timers that include a small community of retired military. They have dedicated sites for short-term stays. There were transient workers as we heard the familiar Cummings diesel start-ups in the wee hours of the morning. There is some road noise, but not bad. They have a nice dog park. As we travel through the area, we will place this CG on our return list.

    Peach Queen Campground

    Peach Queen campground

When we arrived the grass was very tall. They did mow today. Just not my site as we were occupying it. It has full hook ups. Not very much shade. My site has none. The bathrooms are dirty. The pool is a nice size. It could use a vacuum. There is a decent size jungle gym at the playground. My 8 year old son has been having a great time playing with other kids there. There is a nice sized fenced in dog park. There is a swing to sit on. However, it’s all busted up and not usable. There is a nice sized pond. I haven’t been to it yet. There is supposed to be wifi. I don’t see the network when searching for it. We have our own hotspot. It runs on the t mobile network. Except, we don’t have a signal here. I haven’t met anyone who runs this place. Honestly if my son wasn’t having as much fun playing on the playground we would’ve left after the first night. We booked 3 nights as to break up our drive. I definitely wouldn’t stay here again.

    Prairie Creek Campground

    Some sites better than others.

We stayed here over the 4th of July weekend so it was very busy, even with some rain showers.

We stayed at site 23 for 3 nights. this site is located next to the boat ramp and parking lot so there was a lot of traffic. It’s next to the water but 3-4 feet above the water line and blocked by bushes and low hanging trees. There are a couple widow makers above so use caution during storms.

We moved to site 18 which was level with the water and pretty wide open. This area of the campground was much better. The only negative was the amount of ants, which we kept out of the camper with comet.

There was a 3 foot gator around most of the weekend. Some gar and blue cats to catch along with a lot of small crappie.

The facilities were clean. I think there was only one dumpster that is too far to walk with trash. Ice is for sale when social distancing rules go away.

    Prairie Creek Campground

    Mostly shaded sites

Prairie Creek Campground was mostly empty during our 1 night stopover. It is an attractive, wooded campground with mostly shaded sites. Sites along the lake tended to be closer together than I like, but with great views. Sites across the street tended to offer a little more space and, in some cases, more privacy. There were only two other occupied sites in our loop at the opposite end of our section. I had picked a secluded, wooded campsite away from the lake, but was able to move to a secluded, lakeside campsite which turned out to be one of the most enjoyable of our 6 week trip. The bathhouse was old, but clean. It was pleasant to walk the dog around the campground with the added benefit of also being able to walk through the old abandoned campground that was destroyed by a hurricane.

What campers like

Spacious waterfront sites: Forkland Campground provides well-separated campsites with water views. "Stayed 2 nights on a beautiful site overlooking the lake. Wish we could have stayed longer," shares Jeff T. Many sites include small beach areas or access stairs leading directly to the water.

Peace and quiet: The secluded location of Elm Bluff Campground creates a tranquil camping environment. "A somewhat hidden off the beaten path campground. Approximately 10 sites along the Alabama river. Good catfish fishing. Water hookups. Clean outhouses (in the off season at least)," explains Kelly E.

Wildlife viewing: The wetland ecosystems support diverse wildlife watching opportunities. "We saw huge paddlefish jumping out of the water, many birds and deer on the nature trail. Bring fishing poles. Staff super friendly," mentions Jess S. at Payne Lake. Early mornings provide the best wildlife spotting times when birds and fish are most active.

What you should know

Road conditions: Some access roads require careful navigation, especially after rain. "Don't let the partial dirt road fool you. What a find. Secluded, quiet, plenty of wildlife and great fishing. Can't wait to go back," notes Bud P. about COE Alabama River Lakes Chilatchee Creek Campground.

Bug preparation: Mosquitoes can be intense, particularly after rainfall. "Right on the water. Lots of fisherman here and each site has a fish cleaning station. Tips for camping with families

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Electric and water connections are standard, but sewer hookups are limited. "This is one of my favorite places to spend a few days. It is by a beautiful lake and a friendly, well kept campground. It's also close to home so it is easy to run down and get out of town," shares Don K. about Millers Ferry Campground.

Site dimensions: Most campgrounds accommodate larger rigs on concrete pads. "Level gavel site! Lots of trees So cool to see lighting bugs at night! Lot of sites on the water not ours though. Trails and nature for walking dogs," notes L&A C. about Chilatchee Creek. Most sites feature 30-50 foot concrete pads that remain level regardless of weather conditions.

RV amenities: Dump stations are typically centralized rather than at individual sites. "Loved every minute! Great camground, with plenty of access to river. There is even a beach for swimming!" explains Jerry R. about the pet-friendly campground facilities at Millers Ferry.
