    Roland Cooper State Park Campground

    A true gem

I've been sneaking out of town for the last couple of months on my motorcycle you see I have recently got into Hammock camping… as I was looking for a destination I wanted to go somewhere out-of-the-way so I found this little state park in Alabama called Roland Cooper State Park the most clean, friendly and kept up State Park I believe I've ever been to the employees were most helpful and truly enjoy their job I was envious I am now thinking off workamping….. if you haven't heard of this you must check it out I believe it's a perfect fit for people like me I took the wife just a few days ago to swing over night….. now when I say swing I mean in a hammock… lol… she absolutely loved it . if I didn't know better I would think the park was brand-new so this is my new getaway spot ... I drive 200 miles each way and let me tell you this it's worth every inch…. but don't take my word go see for yourself and explore a great outdoors

    Clean quiet campground

We have stayed here many times when were on the road heading  out for the summer.  We had full hook up, a picnic table & there is a small clean restroom near the pool if needed along with a laundry room & place to sit inside if it's hot out.  They have DVD's and some books we trade them where were there. We only stay a night & stay hooked up to the truck. The owners Gigi & her husband work hard to keep the gardens beautiful, the campground maintained & the pool is so clean & refreshing.  You can get propane here.

We've stayed 3 different time & had a nice site towards the back with a garden on the side.

It's off the beaten path a little but well worth it.

    Many things to do

Near Montgomery AL and the Hank Williams museum and the Alabama Shakespeare Theater. We also have the White House of the Confederacy. The campground itself is very nice. They only have one laundry area with just a couple of machines. They have 2 seperate playgrounds, and only 2 restroom areas. There are quite a few pull through sites. The sites are very large and paved. You just have to be aware of snakes and mosquitoes.

    Quiet woods all around!

The Catoma Loop is only a couple of years old and is FHU 50A with paved roads, concrete parking pads and pea gravel patio. Busy but quiet woods all around. On the Alabama River Lakes with a boat ramp in the older Antioch Loop which is in need of updating. Only water and electric there and better suited for smaller rigs. We were on site 35 right across from the playground. It is difficult to get the Catoma Loop to pop up on the Reserve America’s site. No swimming here but nice place to rides bikes, relax and soak up the green.

Gunter Hill Park - Mid State Gem

Gunter Hill Park is a Corp of Engineers campground just outside of Montgomery, Alabama. Although we have not camped at many COE parks, I can't imagine any of them topping this one! Of the 142 sites, 1-75 are renovated with concrete pads and full hook-ups. We were there in February and the weather was a little wet & cold. Since it wasn't very crowded, only 1 area of campsites was open. Be aware if you're there during a string of heavy rain days as some low lying sites may become flooded. Our site backed up to a point where we could sit and watch the water. However, if we had stayed another day we would have been told to move as more rain was expected and the water levels were rising.

The bathrooms were very clean and well maintained. There were also a few hiking trails and nice paved roads for bikes. I did smell a paper factory in the air while we were there. I've also read that you can hear the race cars from the Montgomery Speedway during racing season from your campsite.

There was a lot to explore around the area as well. We went into Montgomery several times. I recommend checking out the AL Dept of History & Archives free museum. Its very well done and I learned a lot about Alabama. We also visited the Memorial for Peace & Justice along with the Legacy Museum. Both very well done and thought provoking.

For a different setting for a meal, check out the nearby Stockyard Grill. You can go in for a burger and leave with the whole cow!

    Family Owned

GiGi & Don have owned this park for 12yrs. Most helpful!! I had what I thought a very low water pressure @ my site. Don took the time to unhook my water & show me my filter had collected so much sediment from previous spot, .needed to be changed ASAP. After, all good!! This place is neat/clean, organized ck-in process. Rates are awesome!! Def be back!! Reason for 4 stars?? Only 1 dumpster all the way in front of campground. More would be really helpful.

    Quiet and friendly!

This little gem of a campground is kind of off the beaten path between Montgomery and Selma. The owners are very friendly and helpful and gave us a GREAT restaurant recommendation (Kimberleas - in old town Prattville) where we had OUTSTANDING meals! The campground is immaculate and very well maintained with each site carefully leveled with gravel to make set up easy! The sites are well placed and spread out so you don’t feel like you’re right on top of the campers next to you. Just a beautiful and bucolic setting and again, very very nice and helpful hosts! Highly recommended!

    Great Experience

This review is based on a short-term versus destination campground (CG). When we made reservations, we were told to only take exit 179 off I-65 and follow the GPS directions, as any other way will take you on narrow roads, including gravel roads. We drove the 14 miles from the exit to the CG with no issues. We were greeted by Don on his golf cart, and his wife, Gigi, checked us in at the office. We received a great rundown of the local area, including restaurant suggestions that looked really good. Unfortunately, we were only overnighting here and did not have the chance to enjoy Prattville. We were led to pull through site A with FHUs. Getting to our site was a little narrow but very doable. The site was level and pleasantly spacious both at and between sites. The utilities are in the middle of the pad. We were able to position so we could get to both black tanks with a 10’ sewer hose. We got 2 bars on Verizon, and their WiFi was better than most CGs this size. Both Don and his wife came by at separate times to ensure we were settled in, to include asking if we needed propane. The CG is mainly full-timers that include a small community of retired military. They have dedicated sites for short-term stays. There were transient workers as we heard the familiar Cummings diesel start-ups in the wee hours of the morning. There is some road noise, but not bad. They have a nice dog park. As we travel through the area, we will place this CG on our return list.

    Brierfield Ironworks Historical Park

Has potential - but just ok

    The good:

Quiet Big shady trees Creek goes through it Lots of neat buildings Camp store has some items and snacks

    The not so good:

Not much information on what you are looking at or should look for

    Picnic tables in sad shape

Camping spots had a bit of a parking lot feel

Bathhouse in disrepair and outdated. Also quite a walk from many campsites.

There appears to be a skeet range adjacent to the camp. We were lucky enough to see a forestry helicopter (tree trimming) working and it used the field to land to refuel.

There was also a swimming pool - closed during our visit for winter of course, but looked like it was an attraction.

Spacious Wooded sites on the Water

Spacious campground with mature trees. (Birders bring your binoculars).

Sites overlooking the water are nicer, in my opinion.

Thankful for bath house with hot showers, even though they were showing their age.

    Beautiful Friendly Park

We arrived and were welcomed by the owner who was very helpful and incredibly friendly. She directed us to our beautiful site right on the river

So quiet and secluded it felt like we had the whole site to our selves.

Fun park for the kids to play on.

    Amazing

This cg is amazing! We were in Catoma Loop. Huge sites, water in back, 50 amp, FHU. Restroom good condition and directly across from us. Very well maintained and friendly hosts. Very quiet. Plenty of walking, and biking. Has a boat launch. Definitely stay here again.

    Very nice campground

Wow, this is such a pretty campground! Our site is absolutely huge! I absolutely love all of the trees!! Unfortunately, it’s still 97° out. 🤣 We are in the shade for most of the day. With a fan, it wasn’t too bad sitting outside in the shade. I am so excited to see the lightning bugs. We don’t have them in my part of FL.

We have one bathhouse near our site (across from site 34), which appears to be older. I do love that the water is regulated and will only be on for a short amount of time. The lights have a motion sensor, which is a great idea. Unfortunately as I was getting dressed, the light turned off and wouldn’t turn back on. I had to open the door and flail around to get it to turn back on. Sorry for anyone who may have witnessed that. lol I was covered up, I promise. The water did not drain where the changing area is. The water just puddled there. We ran across the bathhouse by site 71 and that one is way better. It has AC too, which was nice in this heat. Yes, we use the showers at campgrounds. This also has washers and dryers, but both washers are broken. 😞 Our RV shower is really small and I like to actually move my arms around while showering. Please don’t criticize us for our decision.

Our unfortunate event: while sitting outside, something smell really rancid. Unfortunately, people before us lost their dog. We walked down to look at the water and that’s when we discovered the body. 🥺 I called the front office and they were able to confirm that it was the lost dog. We were unable to sit outside most of the time because of the decay smell drifting up to our site. We hoped the ranger would have come here to pick up the body for the people, but they never showed up. Not the camp hosts responsibility at all and I’m not blaming them. I hope the owners were able to get some closure, but I can’t imagine how they feel.

    Excellent

Amazing cg! Site Catoma 33. Back in site water behind. But cliff is too intense to go down. Gorgeous site, huge, shady, and across from restrooms. Boat ramp. Rode bikes around, but not many places to go besides cg. Friendly hosts and great place!

Love Gunter Hill! ❤️. Wide open and spacious lots here have us spoiled. Clean bathhouse and laundry plus on site boat ramp to the river make it one of our favorite places. Walking trails are great too!

Great site just outside the city

Gunter Hill is run by the Army Corps of Engineers and is a wonderful site anytime of year! The campground offers two large loops, the Catoma loop and the Antioch loop. The Catoma loop is the newer campground area and these sites include sewer hookup as well as large flat concrete pads. As a tent camper, I prefer to stay in the Antioch loop where the sites are more gravel and less concrete. Both loops have nice bathroom and shower facilities.

This is one of the cleanest campgrounds I've ever stayed and it's centrally located between Montgomery and Selma, as well as a nice stop en route to Florida. We weren't able to explore the park too much but will be back here in December and plan to do so. I will be sure to share pictures and update my review then, as it's been a bit since I stayed here last.

All in all, this is a well run and well maintained camping area that hosts several events throughout the year and is the perfect distance outside the city.

    Overnight stay

We just stayed here overnight on our way to Destin, Fl. I liked this campground our site was very spacious. It had a concrete pad a graveled area too. Each site had a picnic table, a grill and a fire pit. The bathrooms were very clean. The showers were individual small rooms on the end of the bath houses. The water was hot in the showers. I did not notice any bugs or cobwebs in the bathrooms.
