Lovely federal park

If you have a boat and are a fisherman you will love this park. We had a spot right on the water. Views were beautiful. Brought our kayaks but didn’t use them as it was a bit chilly and windy. Would definitely. Return. Only downside - lots of poison ivy!! And the bathrooms were rundown and dingy.

Spacious Site

Very spacious sites in Catoma loop. Stayed in site 65 with great access to bathroom/shower house and volleyball net. Beautiful park with some fantastic lakefront sites. Clean, well kept, very affordable rates, and very friendly staff. Some online information suggests the gates close at night. The guard confirmed you are never locked in and can leave at any hour.

Great place for a 1 night stopover!

We stayed in spot 30 on the Catoma loop. We we're very close to the water but obscured by the trees and underbrush. The sewage hookup was very nice to have on a 1 night trip. Bathrooms were clean but had no AC, a little bit of a walk from our spot. Pull through site was easy to park and didn't require any leveling side to side. Verizon cell service was okay, bounced between 1-2 bars with 10-20 mbps. Close enough to Montgomery but still felt very isolated and quiet.

Winter visit

Arrived December 1st for a three night stay. The front gate representative was direct and informative. With map in hand and directions I made it to my site. These sites, several of which are pull through, are huge! Not just the level cement pads but the area around and in between the next site. Very well maintained area. Several water side sites with nice views.

The pavilion is nice and big, awesome for group gatherings. The playgrounds are older and a little worse for wear. The showerhouse on my end was in the middle of a “freshen up”. That being said it probably could use a remodel/update. When I went to shower the funky smell and water sitting in the floor was not pleasant. I picked the one of four that had a dry floor, which when I was done had water sitting in the floor. It was clean but definitely older. The large showerhouse is in a little better shape and no odor, no standing water.

Spacious, Wooded sites, but…

Stayed at Gunter Hill Campground one night on my way to Houston, TX.

Sites were clean and well kept, the campground is large divided by a river.

Enjoyed the one day there.

My But… is the area is so large and the map I was given at check in (Note: Check in person was grumpy and made me feel like I was bothering him). This map does not tell you how to get from one side to another.

The guy that checked me in did not tell me anything except go straight down and take the loop to come back up to my drive through side. He had me going down the wrong side. I went into a turn around that was not very large only to get stuck, as I could not backup with my Jeep in tow. Luckily to park workers came and helped me disconnect my Jeep. Then I had one of them drive my Jeep and I followed to my campsite.

I probably would still be searching today how to get my site if not for them.

I give it 5 stars do to the to gentlemen that helped me and would have only given 3 or 4 stars do to the unwelcoming check-in.

Great place to stay!

We really enjoyed our stay here. We had a pull through site and it was very spacious. The only drawback is occasionally you will get some smell from the paper mill but it is not all the time.

Really Cool Place!

Stayed here Nov 10-15, 2021. I really love the aesthetics of this place. The trees and spanish moss add such a unique charm. The grounds are very well kept. The staff, friendly and helpful. The sites have plenty of room and easy to get into. Plenty of space also for the dogs. I walked my dog in the mornings, it was simple to navigate my walk and get back to my site. The restrooms were nice. They're similar to most state park restrooms. They were kept clean and stocked. The showers were also pretty decent. Our site was at the water and that was cool. My favorite sight was the herd of cranes flying over the water and hanging out.
The only reason for not giving 5 stars is the odor from the swampy-ish water that occurs after it's rained. Nothing anyone can do, but it's worth noting as it can be a strong odor at times. Overall, this has been one of our favorites and a place we would visit again! If you want to see things around the city, its very worth it to go to the equal justice museum and memorial. The new museum is located 1 mile from there. You can also see MLK Jr's house near the memorial. You can search it and find all the info. More than worth it!

Great Times

Great time at Gunter Hill

Gunter Hill Corps of Engineers Campground We stayed 2 nights at Site 27 Full hookups (50 amp electric/water/sewer) $35/night Site #27. is a very long, back-in site, on a level concrete pad, very shady and secluded. The driveway is very long. The Catoma Creek is visible and a short walk just to the rear of this site, affording me quick and easy access to get to a bit of fishing.

The campground is just on the west side of Montgomery, a short drive off of the interstate, far enough away to offer plenty of peace and quiet. We enjoyed lots of walks around the park, getting familiar with the campground while exploring the Catoma loop and the more rustic, electric-only Antioc loop. We were able to put our kayaks in easily as well. The restrooms were slightly dated and dark. No trash pick up, but cans available nearby.

The campground served as a good base to explore nearby Montgomery and it’s suburbs.

Not what we hoped for

We stayed in the Antioch loop on site 93. The site was super close to 92 and 94. We felt we had no personal space. A couple kept walking through our campsite to get to a boat they had parked at our site. I love rustic but Antioch was not rustic, it was over grown and did not look maintained. We think they are letting the Antioch loop go. If that something you like, over grown and close, Antioch loop is for you. We do plan to come back and will try out the Catoma Loop. Catoma Loop looks more like what we enjoy; spaced out, maintained and welcoming.
