Hidden Gem

This is the perfect get away for anyone wanting to escape the fast paced world we live in. Completely off the beaten path and worth the trip. Each area has a shower house, all were clean. Great spots with lots of space and shade. The host was very helpful and friendly. Will be back.

One of my top 5 local favs

I live an hour away so this is one of my favorite spots to visit. There are enough campsites that you don’t have to worry much about finding a spot somewhere unless it is a holiday weekend. Some sites are very open next to the pond and some are back in the woods and more private. I love that the campsites are mostly spread out so you don’t have to worry about neighbors being too close. The pond is beautiful and the trails are great. The paved roads through the campground are great for bikes also. The bathhouse is well maintained. The only thing I would love for them to add is playground equipment for the little ones.

Simple little park

This is a very simple little park with a pond for fishing and swimming, plus a few short hiking trails.

Yay: There are a few camping loops, we stayed in the rustic one, which was densely wooded and lovely.

**Nay: Seemed crowded, but we were there on a summer weekend.  **

Surprise: Surprisingly nice wildlife given the small size of the park, since it’s in the middle of a large rural area with lots of little lakes nearby. Good bird watching.

South Alabama Camping

Stopped through here on a drive home from the beach and it is a great park that we will definitely be back to for a visit. There are lots of great RV and campsites and plenty of hiking to do. The campgrounds range from $6-12 per night depending on RV or tent only and there are all the amenities that you would need. There is also swimming to help cool down when it gets really hot in the summer.

definitely on the "favorite" list

Open Pond is a little known spot in the Conecuh National Forest, one of the largest communities of Southern Longleaf Pines. They do not accept reservations, however the camp host is very helpful if you call ahead to let you know how full they are. There is no camp store, just a kiosk with envelopes for you to pay around $15 per night. They have fairly large sites with power/electric and better than average bathrooms and showers. We love to camp right by the beautiful pond and the pines and cypress. Plenty of wildlife to explore. Birds are everywhere, as are some alligators in some of the cypress swamps. If you ask the ranger, and it's warm enough, they can give you directions to the nearest bog where pitcher plants can be found, but bring waders or good rubber boots. They only grow in wet bogs that have been recently burned, and this is one of the few places to find them in the wild. Great trails, good for mountain bikes. The large Conecuh trail is a great bike trail but it is a large 12-13 mile loop, and there's not a safe/easy way to cut it in half on the highway, so beware.
