Wooded sites perched on a limestone cliff above Lake Winnebago set the tone at High Cliff State Park Campground in Sherwood, Wisconsin. The canopy is dense enough that grassy ground cover gives way to forest floor soil, which turns muddy after rain. Sites vary from open electric hookup spots to more secluded non-electric positions along the cliff edge, where early-season visitors can glimpse the lake through new foliage before the leaves fill in completely. As Shirwil L. notes about the view later in the season, "Imagine later in the season, there is no view."
Crowding follows a predictable pattern here. Holiday weekends draw full occupancy, and the October trick-or-treat event, when campers decorate sites and children move campsite to campsite, brings some of the busiest nights of the year with noise running late into the evening. Outside of those peak periods, the campground tends to stay manageable. Sites in the 30s sit closest to the cliff and trail corridor, which means foot traffic from hikers passing through, especially around sunset.
The park gives campers a lot to work with. Hiking and biking trails connect to limestone formations, historic lime kiln ruins, and Native American burial mounds. There is beach access on Lake Winnebago, a marina, and a lookout tower. The beach area has large grassy sections but limited sand, and lake conditions, including water clarity and choppiness, vary by season. A short walk along the cliff trail leads to an overlook that Calli N. calls "a nice look out, especially for sunset."
Facilities include one flush toilet and shower building, several pit toilet structures, a dump station with single-stream recycling, and electric and water hookups for RVs up to 40 feet. Cell service is reported as workable on at least one major carrier. A grocery store sits just outside the park in Sherwood, and campers looking at places to camp near Sherwood will find Calumet County Park among the nearby alternatives. Reservations are available and recommended for summer and fall weekends.
