Live oaks draped in Spanish moss divide Goose Island State Park Campground into two distinct personalities: a bayside loop where sites sit right at the water's edge, and a wooded interior where shade and privacy take priority. Operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department near Rockport, this year-round campground draws anglers, birders, and coastal campers who want full hookups without sacrificing access to open water. Nightly rates run from $10 to $75, and reservations are available, which matters during the winter birding season when the park fills steadily.
The two camping zones appeal to different priorities, and reviewers are candid about the tradeoffs. Bayside sites face the bay directly, with open sightlines across the water and visible sunrises and sunsets, but early-morning boat launches from the popular ramp can generate significant noise before dawn. The wooded sites, set among live oaks, provide more separation between neighbors and natural wind protection during cold fronts. Tammy C. notes that site 115 has cell service, while sites in the 200s may not. Paved driveways in the wooded area are level, though low-hanging branches require careful maneuvering for taller rigs.
Birding is the activity that draws the most consistent enthusiasm. Whooping Cranes and Sandhill Cranes winter in the area, and the park sits along a productive stretch of the Texas coast for shorebirds and wading species. Fishing is equally popular, with Shari G. observing "more sport fishing folks than birds." The campground has an excellent boat ramp and fish cleaning table. A short drive leads to the Big Tree, one of the oldest live oaks in Texas. The bay water is shallow and lined with oyster beds, so swimming is not practical.
Cleanliness comes up across multiple reviews. Restrooms are consistently described as well-maintained, with individual exterior shower stalls and reliable hot water. All sites include water and electric hookups, and full sewer hookups are available for RVs. Bugs and humidity are real factors, particularly in summer. Campers who have visited in winter and early spring report more manageable conditions. For other options in the area, Hidden Oaks RV Resort and Bay View RV Resort are among the camping near Goose Island State Park. Book early for December through February visits, bring insect repellent regardless of season, and check branch clearances before committing to a wooded site with a tall rig.
