Waking up to Lake Ontario's horizon stretching from the shoreline is the defining experience at Golden Hill State Park Campground in Barker, New York. The park sits directly on the lake, and the lakeside sites in the 40s range give campers an unobstructed look at both sunrise and sunset over open water. Sites in loops A and B run closer together and tend to draw RVs and larger rigs, while loop C provides more space between neighbors. The campground runs from late April through mid-October, giving campers a solid window across three seasons.
Layout matters here. Harry H. describes the sites as "semi-private, some right next to the shore," which captures the range well: some spots feel exposed, others sit close enough to the water that campers report falling asleep to waves. The historic lighthouse on the grounds is worth a walk, and a gazebo, frisbee golf course, and basketball court round out the in-park options. Dogs are allowed, and at least one reviewer notes the open shoreline gives them room to run.
The bathhouses draw mixed reactions. Showers are hot, clean, and ADA compliant with private dressing areas, but the facilities are spread thin across the campground, and campers in loop C may find themselves walking a considerable distance at night. Leah L. notes the campground was "quiet at night," even when sites were full. Full hookups are available for RVs up to 80 feet, and a dump station is on site. Fishing, hiking, and biking trails give non-lake activities some structure.
The campground is a reasonable base for day trips. Niagara Falls is roughly 50 minutes away, and nearby state parks like Devil's Hole and Whirlpool are within driving range. For campers comparing options in the region, Niagara Hartland Campgrounds and Niagara Hartland RV Resort are both within about eight miles to the southwest. Those exploring campgrounds near Golden Hill State Park will find a handful of alternatives in the broader Niagara region. Access carries a rough-road warning, so check conditions before arriving with a low-clearance vehicle. Reservations are required through the New York State park system, and lakefront sites book quickly in July and August.

Golden Hill State Park also offers camping, fishing, boating, shoreline hiking, picnicking, nature walks, and walking tours of the lighthouse site. Summer events at the park are numerous.
