Best Campgrounds near Grand Island, NY

Grand Island, New York serves as a strategic base camp for visitors to Niagara Falls, with several established campgrounds offering convenient access to the famous attraction. HTR Niagara Campground and Niagara Falls/Grand Island KOA Holiday provide full-service camping experiences with amenities catering primarily to RV travelers, though tent sites are also available. These campgrounds feature a range of accommodations including cabins, yurts, and glamping options. Located on an island between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, Grand Island campgrounds are typically within a 15-20 minute drive to the falls while offering a quieter alternative to staying in the more congested tourist areas.

Most campgrounds in the Grand Island area operate seasonally from April/May through October, with advance reservations strongly recommended during summer months. According to Frank M., "This is a very nice campground on Grand Island, only a few miles from Niagara Falls on the American side." Road access is straightforward with well-maintained roads suitable for large RVs and travel trailers. The region experiences typical northeastern seasonal patterns with warm, occasionally humid summers and cold winters that explain the seasonal operation schedule. Campgrounds generally offer full hookups including water, electric (often 50-amp service), and sewer connections. Cell service is reliable throughout the area, and most campgrounds provide WiFi, though connection quality varies during peak usage times.

Campers consistently praise the convenience of Grand Island's location and the quality of facilities. "The site itself was wonderful. It was a large pull thru, nice and level and had plenty of comfortable space between it and the neighboring sites," notes one KOA visitor. Many campgrounds offer recreational amenities including swimming pools, fishing ponds, playgrounds, and rental equipment for water activities. While sites at premium campgrounds command higher prices due to proximity to Niagara Falls, budget options like Cinderella Motel & Campsite provide more affordable alternatives. Waterfront views are limited on Grand Island itself, but nearby state parks like Four Mile Creek State Park Campground offer Lake Ontario access within a short drive, providing what one camper described as "spectacular" sunset views over the water.

    Lake Erie State Park Campground

A very nice park and campground

The facilities are old and outdated like most state parks but it's all clean. The staff is friendly and helpful and the camp sites are a decent size. The views of the lake aren't great but you can find it.

We enjoyed this campground. Attendant advised he had a full connect site available and upgraded. Gravel pad farely level. Filled propane while there. They do trash pickup every morning.

    Niagara County Camping Resort

    Niagra County Camping Resort

Arrived late at night to this established site. This is a mixed accommodation campground with established long term residents & short term sites.

Some sites include a table, power access and tire rim for fire-ring. Showers & flushing toilets are near RV sites in back area. Small camp store, swimming pond & fishing pond. Manager, Christine very nice & helpful.

Campground is relatively close to scenic drives along Lake Ontario & Niagra State Park, Niagra Falls.

    Evangola State Park Campground

    What a shame

This used to be real nice but NY has let all it's park go to pot with lack of funding and no updates

    Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground

    Kid friendly but Bee Problem

We had a lot of fun here and there’s a lot of activities for kids I would typically give this campsite 5 stars but our only problem was there were bees everywhere. I get some bees are apart of the camping experience and nature but we’ve never ran into this problem elsewhere. They were all over the campground it was very unpleasant and there was a nest under the playground we did advise management of.

Four Mile Creek State Park Campground

    Niagara Falls visit

We stayed here when seeing the falls easy 18 min drive to the falls. One perk we were not aware of was free parking at one of the three New Yark park parking lots with our campground pass. Showers clean and warm. Staff helpful and friendly.

    Lake Erie State Park Campground

    Great overnight stop

Stayed one night on a long drive.  Beautiful views of lake.  Amazing grassy fields right by campsites.  Full park but still quiet with good spacing between outer ring spots.

    Niagara Woodland Campground

    Good for the price

Have to say enjoyed my stay, yes lots of year around campers with permanent spots, but lots of activities during my stay and didn’t bother me at all. Meet the owner very nice guy loan me his father tiedown steaks. Plenty of kids having fun by the pool. So I didn’t have to entertain my boys. It’s a well seasoned campground. So on the older side. But didn’t stop us from having a good trip overall

    Lake Erie State Park Campground

    Great Campground

Just returned from staying over the weekend at this campgound with my dog and had a great time. We stayed in a non-electric site in my campervan and it was perfect. There is comfortable space between each campsite in most cases plus lots of trees for shade. Although the campground was full, it was quiet since I like to retire early. We saw lots of wildlife (black squirrels, rabbits and birds). The restroom and showers were nice, they were clean and only a short walk from my campsite. My dog was excited to get lots of walks during the time we were there. The beach was not close to our campsite but I drove there before checking out and walked the dog again. It was a rocky walk along the sand but a beautiful area with a playground. There were, however, many large dead fish along the water line. I can't wait to return to Lake Erie State Park because I enjoyed it so much!

Guide to Grand Island

Grand Island, NY sits on the Niagara River between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, with elevations ranging between 590-610 feet above sea level. The island experiences warm summers averaging 80°F and cold winters that drop to 20°F, explaining the seasonal operation of most campgrounds from April through October. Cell service remains consistent throughout camping areas while WiFi quality varies based on campground location and visitor volume.

What to do

Zipline adventures: HTR Niagara Campground offers both adult and kid ziplines along with various water activities. "Love love love this place! We didn't even want to leave it to go to the Falls!" notes Erin H., who appreciated the campground's proximity to Niagara Falls while still offering plenty of on-site recreation.

Fishing opportunities: Four Mile Creek State Park Campground provides fishing access along with hiking trails. Ashley B. shares that the park has "great sites, secluded from neighbors, nice trails to hike" making it ideal for those seeking a balance of water and land-based activities.

Tour scheduling: Most campgrounds offer Niagara Falls tour booking services directly from their offices. "You can schedule tours of the falls in the office. Tour bus stops at office," explains Mike H. from Niagara Falls/Grand Island KOA Holiday, highlighting the convenience of not having to arrange transportation separately.

What campers like

Multiple swimming options: Branches of Niagara Campground maintains three pools, including a saltwater pool. L W. reports, "This was the most perfect family campground we've been to... Our favorites were the 3 pools and brand new playground. We have little kids and they were just as entertained as all the big kids."

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the roomier sites at Darien Lakes State Park Campground, which offers more privacy than campgrounds closer to Niagara Falls. Jim S. mentions, "Always clean and well maintained. Also has a nice beach and all newly remodeled bathrooms."

Off-season tranquility: October visitors find significantly less crowding while still enjoying pleasant weather. Thomas S. notes, "We timed our visit well. The park was pretty empty in mid-October but the weather was still nice. Would recommend this KOA for visitors to Niagara."

What you should know

Budget options available: While premium campgrounds near Niagara Falls command higher prices, Cinderella Motel & Campsite offers more affordable rates. Jeff C. explains, "KOA and Branches CGs are nicer but they are also triple the price which for us did not seem worth it... We were here to visit Niagara Falls so location and a basic campground with full hookups was all we were looking for."

Bathroom facilities vary: Campground bathroom quality ranges considerably across Grand Island camping options. Paula from Four Mile Creek State Park Campground reports, "The bathhouse in the 200 loop with bathrooms and showers are up-to-date and SUPER CLEAN," while others note more basic facilities at budget locations.

Traffic considerations: Some campgrounds experience road noise due to their proximity to major roads. Shan Q. from Niagara Falls Campground & Lodging advises, "The noises of the town made it very difficult to sleep in our tent. It's right off the main road and nearby trains blared their horns throughout the night. Might not be that bad if you're in a camper."

Tips for camping with families

Activity variety: Niagaras Lazy Lakes Camping Resort offers numerous family-oriented amenities beyond the typical pool. Stephanie B. shares, "There is so much to do at Lazy Lakes! From fishing to pools the kids always had something to do. I enjoyed the wine tasting and flea market."

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature updated play areas for children of different ages. Keri from HTR Niagara Campground mentions, "Lots of activities at this park, staff is friendly, clean pools, facilities, zip line, boat rentals, spacious sites, and minutes from the falls!"

Kid-friendly bath facilities: Some campgrounds offer family showering areas to assist parents with young children. L W. notes that HTR Niagara Campground has "Lots of bath house and some with family showering areas," making cleanup easier after a day of activities.

Tips from RVers

Seasonal hookup availability: Most Grand Island campgrounds offer full hookups during their operational season, with some sites featuring 50-amp service. Kirk S. from Niagara Falls North / Lewiston KOA reports, "Internet is really good and has been upgraded recently with 2G and 5G access. Bathrooms are clean and functional."

Site surface variations: RV sites range from gravel to grass depending on the campground. April L. explains that Niagara Falls/Grand Island KOA Holiday offers "full hook up back ins and pull through sites" with varying levels of shade and privacy.

Navigation advice: Large RVs should plan routes carefully when approaching from certain directions. Mike H. cautions, "If you are coming in from the southern side, DO NOT GO THROUGH DOWNTOWN BUFFALO like we did! PAY THE TOLLS!" This route advice can save significant time and stress with larger vehicles.
