Reservations open up fast at Salisbury Beach State Reservation, a state-managed campground running $28-$38 per night along the Massachusetts coast between the Atlantic and the Merrimack River. The campground is open from early May through mid-October, and sites fill quickly once summer arrives. Paved roads and concrete pads throughout the campground make entry and leveling straightforward, and the facility accommodates rigs up to 60 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer. A three-lane dump station serves those passing through. Nearby, The Pines Camping Area and Beach Rose RV Park offer additional options in the same stretch of coastline.
Shade is minimal. Most sites sit in open terrain with little tree cover, and multiple reviewers flag the heat as a real factor in summer. An awning helps considerably. Sites are close together, and the campground has a communal, social feel, especially later in the season when long-term RV campers settle in for weeks at a time. As Dawn E. notes, "if you're looking for privacy and quiet, this isn't the place for you." Quiet hours are enforced, though enforcement quality has varied based on which staff are on duty.
The location gives campers direct access to the beach on one side and the Merrimack River on the other. Paddlers report seeing seals in the river, and the marsh area off the river works well for birding and kayaking. Tidal currents run strong, so anyone paddling should check conditions before heading out. Spring striped bass fishing draws anglers to the area, and the nearby beach supports swimming and boogie boarding at high tide. Dogs are permitted and can swim on the river side.
The town of Salisbury sits within walking distance, with arcades, food stands, ice cream, and a carousel along a boardwalk-style strip. Beaver Creek Farm and Black Bear Campground are options for campers who want more wooded, quieter surroundings in the region. Cell coverage is solid on Verizon, and most sites have open sightlines that allow satellite reception. Bathhouse quality has been inconsistent in recent years, with at least one facility undergoing extended renovation, so checking current conditions before arrival is worth the effort.
