Fishing, paddling, and bank-side crabbing along the Choptank River draw many visitors to Martinak State Park Campground, a state-managed site in Denton, Maryland. A boat launch gives anglers and kayakers direct water access, and the park's position at the confluence of the Choptank River and Watts Creek means there are multiple spots to cast a line or put in a kayak. Flat, paved trails loop through the grounds and extend toward the water, with the point near the boat ramp area offering open sightlines across the river. Rangers have been known to make rounds through the campground with live animals, including turtles and snakes, for an informal educational experience that younger campers tend to appreciate.
The campground runs two loops, each centered around its own bathhouse. Loop B carries 30-amp electric hookups, while Loop A has a mix of non-electric sites and a handful of first-come, first-served electric spots. Sites in the electric loop sit on the outside of the drive, so campers face the wooded perimeter rather than each other across the road. As Craig Z. notes, "Water stations are located around the drive loop" since hookups don't include individual water connections. Sites are generally level, well-shaded by pine and hardwood, and spacious enough for two tents or a mid-size RV. The park caps RV length at 35 feet, and a few sites may require maneuvering through low-hanging branches.
Bathhouse conditions have drawn mixed comments. The facilities were renovated around 2018 and have been described as clean and modern in some visits, while other reviewers noted the showers needed more frequent attention during peak summer months. Each bathhouse includes an outdoor dishwashing sink, which campers find useful after cooking. The dump station is on-site but has been closed during some stays, with Tuckahoe State Park Campground available as a backup roughly 10 miles away. Cell service is spotty across carriers, which Stefanie H. calls "perfect for a weekend away."
A few practical considerations are worth noting before booking. The park is not gated, so day visitors do drive through the campground loops. Campers staying near the park boundary may hear the Denton fire station's emergency siren at night, and goose hunters in the area can produce early-morning noise during hunting season. The town of Denton is about five minutes from the park entrance, with a grocery store, Walmart, gas stations, and restaurants within easy reach. For day trips, Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge are both within roughly 40 miles. Reservations are available online, and check-in can be completed without stopping at the office. The season runs March through November, making it a workable base for campgrounds near Martinak State Park on a longer Eastern Shore itinerary.
