Kayaking, fishing, and hiking give campers plenty of reasons to make the drive down to Palmetto Island State Park Campground, set within a swampy stretch of coastal Louisiana south of Abbeville. The park sits on water on multiple sides, and reviewers consistently mention spotting alligators, deer, wild hogs, and jumping fish without leaving the campground roads. Bug spray is worth packing. The surrounding wetlands make insects a reliable presence, particularly in warmer months.
Sites here are wide, gravel-surfaced, and level, with full hookups across the board, including electric, water, and sewer. Electrical service runs 50/30/20 amp, though one reviewer notes the 20-amp configuration requires flipping all breakers, which is a quirk worth knowing before arrival. Sites arranged in loops at the ends of the campground roads tend to provide the most space and separation from neighbors. "All the spaces have electric, water and sewer," confirms Lisa M., who also found the showers clean and the laundry facility functional. Bring quarters, or pick up rolls at a nearby Dollar General.
The park has a small lake for fishing, kayak and canoe trails, walking trails on paved and natural surfaces, a splash pad, and a playground. Four primitive tent sites sit roughly a mile in on the far side of the lake, offering more separation from the RV loop. Cell service is inconsistent throughout the park, and the WiFi is not reliable enough for remote work.
Weekends draw a local crowd, and the campground fills quickly on Friday evenings. Travels W. notes that "weekdays I think would be a little quieter," which holds for those sensitive to noise from neighboring sites. The access road is the most consistent complaint across reviews, with the last three to four miles in rough condition regardless of season. Reservations are available and recommended, especially for weekends. Campers wanting a different setup in the region can look at Heberts Cajun Haven RV Park to the north as an alternative.
