Alum Gap Primitive Camping

The hike down the Laurel trail was really mellow. Roughly a 3 mile gradual descent and then you can branch off and hike to some of the falls on the West side of the park. Campsites 4 and 5 are near the bluff so keep that in mind if you have little ones running around. There is an outhouse style bathroom, but no potable water on-site. We hiked to Greeter Falls and then went to the Greeter Falls campground to restock on essentials. They have a camp general store and café. Highly recommend!

Plenty of spacious campsites, an easy hike (almost too short!) from the visitor center. Rustic, dispersed, but close enough to other people so you don’t feel absolutely stranded!

Easy introductory backpacking

Alum Gap campground, situated in the backcountry of Tennessee, is not only a hidden gem but also a perfect choice for those new to backpacking. Accessible via a straightforward hike of just a little over one mile from the Greeter Falls parking area, this primitive camping site offers an inviting introduction to the world of wilderness adventures. Each campsite provides a generously sized designated area, offering ample space for multiple tents and featuring an established fire ring. However, be prepared for a rustic experience, as there are no bathroom facilities or other man-made structures in sight. 

During my visit over Labor Day weekend, I found the campground to be remarkably uncrowded, indicating that it is less frequented by campers. Most of the campsites are surrounded by trees and offer a serene woodland setting. However, a mere half-mile down the trail, the landscape opens up to reveal a breathtaking viewpoint that offers a stunning look out at the canyon. On my hike there, I encountered a small creek, which served as a sufficient water source. Depending on recent rainfall, you might need to collect water back at the Greeter Falls area. One noteworthy aspect is that there aren't any clear distinctions between the different available sites; they all offer a satisfying camping experience. 

Exploring the waterfalls in the area is an absolute must. These natural wonders, especially on a scorching hot day, offer the perfect opportunity to cool off with a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear pools at their base. Furthermore, you'll be pleased to know that cell phone service is excellent, thanks to the location atop the plateau. To ensure a smooth camping experience, make sure to reserve a site in advance. 

In summary, Alum Gap campground provides a remote and tranquil wilderness camping experience in Tennessee, with an easy access trail that makes it an ideal introductory backpacking option. While amenities are minimal, the campground's seclusion, beautiful surroundings, and nearby attractions, including scenic viewpoints and waterfalls, make it a remarkable destination for nature enthusiasts. Don't forget to plan ahead and secure your reservation for an unforgettable backcountry adventure.

A wonderful spot

Perched on the rim and a nexus of trails that will take you to everything you want to see in this part of the park. Short hike in (3 miles from Stone Door lot). Views of canyon in winter.

Primitive camping bliss

Several different ways to hike in and many different sights to see. Definitely plan on revisiting. The waterfall here can be close to 25-30 ft. If you're adventurous it's definitely worth a quick plunge

Primitive camping with several approaches

This campground is definitely primitive camping, but it has some of the most beautiful views at the camp and a lot more getting there. This camp can be found at the end of either the Savage Gulf Big Creek Rim or Gulf Trails. It can also be reached from Greeter Falls.

We've camped there three times and it can get loud at night if the other campers don't follow the quiet times. You'll want to check in with the Rangers at Stone Door before you head out. There is an outhouse where the camp loop meets the Rim Trail.

BCG to Alum Gap, BCR out

great backing trip with my 9year old! BCG in to Alum Gap campground and BCR out. camp ground has been picked almost clean of lower tree life so no privacy from neighbors. Quiet and Clean though. hike was full of great scenery, 2 falls if you add a little extra and check out Laurel and Raccoon falls.pic of raccon falls

Great beginner's backpacking trip!

The Alum Gap campground in Savage Gulf State Natural Area was a perfect destination for a first-time backpacker (like me!). The trail is easy-moderate, mostly flat with only a few inclines. Most of the sites are large, with lots of space to set up camp and hang out, and they're far enough apart to maintain a decent amount of privacy. There is a small outhouse available, as well as a small stream nearby (just make sure you have a water purifier!). We were lucky enough to get campsite #4, which has the best views of the bluff, hands down.

The campground is a short hike (1-2 miles) from Upper & Lower Boardtree Falls and Greeter Falls, which are all beautiful. It makes for a great way to spend the afternoon!
