Teton National Forest's Shadow Mountain Campground puts campers on a hillside above the valley floor, with open sightlines toward the Teton range that multiple reviewers cite as the primary draw. This is true dispersed camping. No water, no hookups, no facilities of any kind, so arriving fully stocked is not optional.
Road conditions are a recurring topic in reviews and worth taking seriously before the drive out. The south entrance near Mormon Row is the more accessible route and suitable for most vehicles in dry conditions. The north entrance is considered 4x4 territory. Many of the 40-plus sites sit up a steep hillside where some spots are not level enough for tenting, and by late afternoon on summer days, lower sites tend to fill first. As Kristi D. puts it, "No electric or water, but you trade all of that for the view alone."
The campground sits in bear country, and food storage is a genuine concern rather than a formality. At least one site has a bear box on-site, though availability varies. Campfires are permitted, cell service is listed as available, and pets are welcome. Stays are limited to five days and operate on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. Campers planning a broader trip should note this location works well as a base for the Teton and Jackson area, and those looking at campgrounds around Teton National Forest will find several nearby options including Shadow Mountain Designated Campsites 10-11 to the southwest. Arrive early, come prepared, and the hilltop sites are worth the effort.
