Shadow Mountain Campground

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Shadow Mountain Campground, near the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, is a fantastic spot for those who crave stunning views and a true back-to-nature experience. This place is all about simplicity, with no frills like electric hookups or drinking water, but what you get in return is some of the best scenery around.

Campers rave about the breathtaking vistas of the Teton mountain range, making it a prime location for photography and relaxation. As one visitor put it, “You will not find any better views at any other campsite.” The area is perfect for tent and RV camping, and while there are no reservable sites, the first-come, first-served policy adds to the adventure.

You’ll find fire pits available for cozy evenings under the stars, but be prepared to bring your own firewood. The roads leading in can be a bit rough, so a vehicle that can handle off-road conditions is recommended, especially if it’s muddy. Many campers appreciate the freedom of boondocking here, with one saying, “You trade all of that for the view alone.”

If you’re looking to explore, the Grand Teton National Park is just a stone's throw away, offering endless opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing. Shadow Mountain Campground is a great choice for those who want to immerse themselves in nature and enjoy the great outdoors without the distractions of modern amenities.

Beautiful stay with lots of spots to settle in

Stayed on top of a hill (can’t remember my site number)… was near a group and another solo camper but still had my own space. Many of the lots were full when I arrived around 7pm - 3-4 per site. Bear country, had safe food storage for you if needed at my site, unsure about all the others. Bit of a drive to get up there but nothing an SUV with AWD can’t handle.

High clearence needed, peaceful, great views of the Tetons

This is a great location if you are exploring the Teton/Jackson area. It's a little far to camp here and then go to Yellowstone.

There are a lot of camping spots that are dispersed to choose from, but keep in mind that even with the low amount of reviews here it's a well known spot to locals.

We stayed here in June and finally found a spot after passing dozens of filled ones, only to see about half a dozen other vehicles drive by looking for somewhere to park.

This is true back-country camping, pack in and pack out. No potable water is available and no facilities so be prepared with all your needs before coming here. Also note that this is bear country so be prepared with food and smell management to limit attracting them in.

The Sunset over the Tetons was amazing and we would stay here again in the future.

Better Than Anything You Could Pay For

Absolutely the best the USFS dispersed system has to offer. Unbeatable views, understanding site neighbors, attentive host, and all the peace and quiet you can tolerate. Be forewarned, after you drive all the way back to the dispersed site area, MOST of 40+ sites are up a steep, 4x4 required hillside, many aren’t level enough for tenting, and all are in bear country, but again- WORTH IT. Have been here 3x now and will be back.

Beautiful views better camp ambassador

We had a lovely time camping at shadow mountain. During our stay we had the pleasure of meeting the camp ambassador Mr. Ron Rappaport. Mr. Ron helped us out of a pinch and was the epitome of hospitable! We are so thankful for our time at the Grand Tetons and are thankful for nice and helpful people while traveling!

The view alone!

First come first serve, no reservations....you can stay up to five days.

No electric or water, but you trade all of that for the view alone. They do have a fire pit.

I would not recommend something without 4 wheel drive if it's muddy. The roads are a little rough, so would recommend a vehicle that is fine going off road to get up the hill. This is boondocking and you cant beat free!

Had a great time here and would definitely camp here again!!!
