Antelope Springs Designated Dispersed Camping Sites 1-8

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Eight designated sites arranged in a loop off Shadow Mountain Road give this free Teton National Forest camp a more organized feel than typical dispersed camping, while still keeping costs at zero. The access road draws consistent attention in reviews: campers in sedans and minivans have made it through without issue, though the approach from the north end runs rougher than the southern entry via Mormon Row. Winter visits require a different calculation entirely, with at least a foot of snow on the ground in December and the final mile demanding 4WD or chains.

The views here are the defining feature. Sites face open sightlines toward the Grand Tetons, and choosing a spot toward the end of the road puts some distance between you and neighboring campers. "A lot of people driving up but it was mostly quiet," notes Brook L., which captures the camp's rhythm well: traffic through the loop during the day, relative quiet once people settle in. A fox spotted near sunset was the wildlife highlight for at least one visitor.

Amenities are minimal but functional. Each site has a fire ring, shared bear boxes are located nearby, and two vault toilets serve the loop, reported consistently clean during the main season. Cell coverage works at the sites themselves even when the approach road loses signal, and Starlink users have had no issues. Shadow Mountain Dispersed Camping sits just to the southwest for campers who want a different configuration in the same area.

Crowd pressure is real in summer. With only eight spots and no reservation system, arriving by early afternoon on weekdays, and earlier on weekends, gives the best odds of securing a site. Afternoon thunderstorms can leave sites muddy, and wind-driven dirt finds its way inside tents even with rain flies in place. The bathrooms are locked in the off-season, so winter campers should plan accordingly. Antelope Springs Campsites sits just to the northeast as another option nearby. Campers who want a free base for places to camp near Teton National Forest with fire rings, bear storage, and Teton views will find this loop a workable and well-maintained choice.

Campers regularly cited the spectacular Teton views, spacious sites with fire rings, and clean facilities as major highlights. Many appreciated Ron, the helpful camp host who maintains the area well. Spots fill quickly in summer, so early arrival is recommended for this popular first-come location.

Gorgeous views close to Tetons, but fills up SUPER fast!

On the Bridger-Teton National Forest just outside Grand Teton National Park, Shadow Mountain is gorgeous, one of the most popular free camping areas in Jackson Hole, and fills up very quickly. It is a"Designated Dispersed Camping Area,” designed to protect natural resources from overuse and bad behavior(think improper food storage, abandoned campfires, and leaving human waste and trash).

Here there are 51 numbered sites, most of which have a steel fire ring. Most sites have Teton views.(The best views of Grand Teton National Park aren’t necessarily inside Grand Teton National Park!)

Since this is an area in which black and grizzly bears live, food must be stored inside a hard-sided vehicle.

Although the BTNF and its nonprofit partner, Friends of the Bridger-Teton, place volunteer camping ambassadors at Shadow Mountain to help educate campers about food storage and putting fires dead out and have installed vault toilets at the base of the mountain, problems with human waste and campers leaving trash persist. These problems seem especially bad this summer.

Sites at Antelope Springs/Shadow Mountain are free and first-come/first-served. Most mornings, if you arrive after 10 a.m., you won't be able to get a site. You must be in a marked/numbered site, you cannot camp randomly along the road.

Between May 1 and Labor Day, there is a 5-day maximum stay limit in any 30 day period at Shadow Mountain. If you get to Jackson Hole too late to get a spot at Shadow Mountain, consider camping for a night at Moran Vista, which is less than a 30-minute drive from Shadow Mountain. To get to Moran Vista, go back out to U.S. Highway 191, turn right(north) and go for about 12 miles to to Forest Road 30290. Turn right here and go 1/4 mile off the highway to the Moran Vista Camping Area. While only a large parking lot, its location is unbeatable, it’s free, and it rarely fills up. If you’re set on camping at Shadow Mountain, stay here one night and then head over to Shadow early the next morning to see if any sites have opened up.

As of July the BTNF has a digital reader board at the turn off going into to Shadow that tells you when the sites are full.

Beautiful but BUSY

A really beautiful and nice free camp site. However, insanely busy. I arrived Wednesday morning and got lucky with a site. All others were taken and at LEAST 50 cars drove by looking for a spot. I’m sure that’s double as it gets closer to the weekend

Great views

Staying in the area gives you unbelievable views of the Tetons. There is a toilet in the first area, decent for dispersed camping with a lot of traffic during the busy season. Quite a bit of traffic during the day as people are looking for sites.

Overnight stay in December!

Access was super easy, any vehicle can make it to this campground. We intended to camp further up Shadow Mountain but the road was closed, this camp was conveniently right there so we parked and stayed overnight. Woke up to a layer of snow! we stayed here 12/16 and saw 12 moose on our drive back to town.

Has several spots at a few locations off the roads. Road is rock (small car safe) but pulling into camp sites use caution potholes are big but easy maneuvered. Would have got five if water.

Great view

Well kept dispersed camping spot. Only 8 spots in the circle so you have to get here early. They have two clean vault toilets as well. The afternoon rain does create mud throughout your campsite and the bottom of your tent will be wet and muddy. The wind also picks up the dry dirt and makes the inside of your tent quite sandy even with the rain fly on.

Also accessible by sedan or low clearance vehicle; however, you can’t go up the mountain to the other shadow mountain spots with a sedan

Great view

Let’s start off by saying that the ride to get to these spots is very bumpy. Originally we entered from the north end, I do not recommend that way due to the rough road. After settling in and going to explore the park, entering from the south by Mormon row was wayyyyy better.

Very simple camping. They have fire rings, and shared food lockers. Only 7 spots in this loop. 2 of them isolated and the rest are close together.

No amenities, pack out. Very happy to see there’s no trash laying around!

Some 3G service with T-Mobile. Starlink was perfect out here.

It was a nice spot

Honestly first dispersed campsite I’ve been too and it wasn’t bad. In google maps the road you turn in is shadow mountain rd. that was the most difficult part getting here as I had no service but once you get to the campsite I was able to text and call. The road is sketchy for a moment then it levels out. (I made it with my Nissan Sentra). Campsite is busy. A lot of people driving up but it was mostly quiet. bear warnings everywhere but I didn’t see any. Bathrooms were a plus! Nothing fancy just a hole in the ground. Over all a nice little spot with a good view of the mountains.

You have a pretty stellar view of the Tetons from this site. It’s plenty big so unless it’s peak season you should be able to get a spot. They even have a bathroom!

Beautiful view and calm

I strongly recommend this site, but can be packed in the summer. I stayed here Dec 20th-21st. Because of season, there was a foot of snow at least. We had to dig out snow at the beginning because a snow plow pushed about 2 feet high. Then it was a mile back to the area, make sure you have really good tires and 4WD or chains. We then used our 4-runner to compact the snow at the site and dug the rest out with snow shovels. It was about 4°F/20°C that night. But nobody was there and the view was beautiful.

I was lucky enough to snap an empty spot for my 30th birthday, with a beautiful view of the Tetons! Ron, the “camp ambassador” was so funny and a great host, my dog loved playing with his dog Meeka too. He kept the pit toilets SUPER well maintained and smelling great. Only problem is it gets really busy so spots are hard to come by!

Open, secluded, and breathtaking view!

The Grand Tetons really popped off. This dispersed site had an incredible view of them! The road wasn't too rough, minivan friendly. There are fire rings at each spot I saw, and a bear storage food lockbox not too far. The snow was light and beautiful. Didn't see much wildlife, except for a beautiful little fox towards sunset. Would recommend this place for Grand Teton admirers.

I chose a spot farther towards the end of the road and didn't see/hear any of the other campers that were a few spaces away. Nice and secluded but open enough to feel safe and peaceful.

Has campground host and toilets

We felt super safe, the host from USFS came by and told us about bears in the area the night before but that we shouldn't worry. There are several loops for tent/van only and vault toilets and bear boxes. Great views of the Tetons and we even saw a moose in the horizon in the morning! We came around 5pm and secured a spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Antelope Springs Campground located in Wyoming?

Antelope Springs Designated Dispersed Camping Sites are located near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. The campground is situated off Shadow Mountain Road, providing spectacular views of the Teton mountain range. While the exact location isn't marked precisely on all maps, following Shadow Mountain Road will lead you to clear signs for the camping area. The campground's position offers both seclusion and proximity to the natural attractions of the Tetons.

How does Antelope Springs Campground compare to camping in Grand Teton National Park?

Antelope Springs offers a more relaxed alternative to camping within Grand Teton National Park. While park campgrounds require reservations months in advance and have stricter regulations, Antelope Springs operates on a first-come, first-served basis and tends to be less crowded. The campground provides direct views of the Tetons similar to those from park locations like Antelope Flats, but with more privacy and a wilderness feel. Amenities are more basic than park campgrounds (vault toilets, fire rings, and bear boxes), but the trade-off is a more authentic backcountry experience while still maintaining reasonable access to park attractions.

What hot springs are accessible near Antelope Springs Campground?

While Antelope Springs Campground is named for springs, it doesn't have thermal hot springs on-site or immediately nearby. The nearest developed hot springs would be Granite Hot Springs, located south of Jackson, or Astoria Hot Springs Park. For natural thermal features, Yellowstone National Park's geothermal areas are accessible as a day trip from the campground. If you're specifically seeking hot springs experiences, consider contacting the local ranger district for current information on accessible thermal features in the region.

Is dispersed camping allowed at Antelope Springs?

Yes, Antelope Springs offers designated dispersed camping. The area features 8 established sites with fire rings and some basic amenities. These are designated dispersed sites managed by the US Forest Service, meaning they offer more structure than typical dispersed camping while maintaining a natural setting. Each site is first-come, first-served, and the camping area includes vault toilets and bear boxes for food storage. The sites accommodate various camping setups, from tents to smaller RVs.
