Dirt roads, dispersed sites, and a lakeside location define the experience at Grassy Lake Dispersed Camping in John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway, Wyoming. Managed by the US Forest Service within Targhee National Forest, this free drive-in area sits alongside Grassy Lake and draws campers who are willing to navigate a long unpaved road to reach it. Expect to cover significant ground before finding an open site, particularly on busy summer weekends.
Sites range from spots tucked into the tree line to positions closer to the lakeshore. Prebuilt fire pits are in place at some sites, though firewood is scarce on the ground, so bringing your own is worth the effort. Fishing is one of the main draws here, and water access is close at hand. Pine beetle damage has affected much of the forest along the access road, which has changed the character of the surrounding landscape considerably. Bugs near the lake can be heavy, especially in early summer.
Amenities are minimal but functional. Toilets are available on-site, campfires are permitted, and pets are welcome. Trash service is provided, which helps keep the area clean. Aly V. notes that "bugs can be intense cause you're next to the lake," a fair warning for anyone sensitive to insects. Note that a steel gate blocks the trail before reaching Grand Teton, so this road does not serve as a through-route to the park.
Nearby dispersed options include Grassy Lake Reservoir Dispersed Camping to the west and Grassy Reservoir Dispersed to the southeast for campers who want to compare sites along the same corridor before committing to a spot.
