Long drive!

We had to drive super far to find a spot to stay. But we got lucky. They do have a fire pit and a lot of seclusion. Just a long drive on the dirt road. Bugs can be intense cause you’re next to the lake. The pine beetles have demolished miles and miles of the forest along the road to the campsites so it isn’t the most scenic anymore but Yellowstone has been really affected as a whole by the beetles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the best dispersed campsites along Grassy Lake Road in Wyoming?

The best dispersed campsites along Grassy Lake Road can be found in the tree line surrounding the lake and along the beach areas. Many sites feature pre-built fire pits and offer good seclusion. The most desirable spots provide a balance of privacy and lake access, though you may need to drive further along the road to find available sites during peak seasons. Sites in the tree line offer more shade, while beach areas provide easier water access. Be prepared to bring your own firewood as gathering options are limited in the immediate area.

Is dispersed camping allowed at Grassy Lake Reservoir in Wyoming?

Yes, dispersed camping is allowed at Grassy Lake Reservoir in Wyoming. The area offers numerous informal camping spots both along the tree line and near the beach areas. Sites typically come with pre-built fire pits and provide a quiet, uncrowded camping experience. There's no formal reservation system, so camping is first-come, first-served. The area maintains primitive camping standards with basic amenities like vault toilets. This makes Grassy Lake Reservoir an excellent option for those seeking a more rustic and peaceful camping experience away from developed campgrounds.

What's the road condition like on Grassy Lake Road for RVs and larger vehicles?

Grassy Lake Road is a dirt/gravel road that presents challenges for larger vehicles and RVs. The unpaved surface can be rough in sections, requiring slow and careful driving. The road extends quite far to reach camping areas, making for a lengthy journey on unimproved terrain. Large sections of forest along the route have been affected by pine beetles, which may impact the driving experience. While accessible by larger vehicles with adequate ground clearance, drivers should be prepared for a bumpy ride and allow extra travel time. Conditions may vary seasonally, so having a vehicle with good clearance is advisable.

How close is Grassy Lake Road camping to Yellowstone National Park?

Grassy Lake Road camping is located in the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway, which connects Grand Teton National Park to Yellowstone National Park. While the camping area provides relatively close access to the south entrance of Yellowstone, it's important to note that direct access to Grand Teton via this road is blocked by a gate. The road serves as a scenic alternative route between the parks, though not a complete throughway. Plan for approximately 25-30 miles to Yellowstone's South Entrance, depending on which dispersed site you choose. This makes it a good base camp for those wanting to visit Yellowstone while enjoying a more secluded camping experience.
