Oak Island — Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Late summer through early fall (August-September) is generally the best time to visit Oak Island. During June and July, insects can be problematic, requiring head nets and long clothing for comfort. The island is typically open from late spring through early fall, with the summer months offering warmer temperatures for swimming and water activities. Weather can change quickly on Lake Superior, so always check forecasts before departure and be prepared for varying conditions regardless of when you visit.

Oak Island is only accessible by boat as part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Visitors need to arrange water transportation via private boat, water taxi, or kayak from the mainland. The most common departure points are from Bayfield, WI. Once on the island, be prepared for hiking to reach your specific campsite. The island has several landing points, and you'll need to plan your arrival based on your reserved campsite location and weather conditions.

Oak Island offers several distinct camping options. Site A is ideal for group camping (accommodating 8-24 people), while Site 6 provides more privacy on the northeastern side of the island. Sites 1 and 3 are also good choices. Several other campsites are located closer to the ranger station. Facilities are primitive—expect vault toilets, no running water, and no electricity. All sites require advance reservations through the National Park Service, and campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash.

Oak Island offers excellent hiking opportunities, including a trail to The Overlook which provides panoramic views of Lake Superior and surrounding islands. Visitors can explore the island's diverse forest ecosystems, beaches, and shoreline. Wildlife observation, photography, and stargazing are popular activities. Water-based recreation includes swimming, fishing, and paddling around the island's perimeter.
