Jointly managed by a local township park board and the National Park Service, Little Sand Bay Recreation Area sits on the shore of Lake Superior within places to camp around Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, giving it a dual identity that shapes the experience. The campground runs from April through November and accommodates a wide range of campers, from RVs with full hookups to tent campers and boaters arriving by water. Roughly 40 sites include pull-through RV pads with electric, water, and sewer connections, a group area near the lake, and around six tent-only sites arranged in a narrow strip with little separation between them.
Water access is the campground's most consistent draw. A boat ramp, dock, and beach give paddlers and boaters direct entry to Lake Superior, and the location serves as a common staging point for kayakers heading toward the Apostle Islands. Reviewers note that the tent sites drain poorly in heavy rain and offer minimal privacy, while the RV sites tend to be larger and more shaded. Crowd levels vary considerably by date: mid-September can bring a packed campground with noise from neighboring sites, while late September visits have reportedly been nearly empty.
"Tent 'lakeside' site is an open court yard setting which is a little strange," notes Tim S., a fair warning for tent campers expecting a wooded layout. Pay showers run $2 for eight minutes, and firewood is available on-site. The town of Bayfield, about 15 minutes away, has outfitters and supplies. Reservations are accepted, and booking ahead is worth considering if you plan a summer weekend visit.
