"Stevens Falls and Canyon Trails were the highlight of the trip- even in the rain! Once you continue down to the falls they have another informational plaque about the falls with old pictures. The falls themselves are amazing," notes Siobhan R.
Beach activities: Cool off at Lake Kegonsa's designated swimming areas during summer months when temperatures regularly reach 80°F. "What really makes this campground is the lake. There's a nice beach for kids and adults to relax at and lots of kayaks on the water," according to Ryan K. at Lake Kegonsa State Park.
Fall color viewing: Plan equestrian trips near Cross Plains during October when maple and oak trees display vibrant foliage. "I love coming here. It's very convenient to get to and it has some great campsites. I recommend going in the Fall to see some great Fall colors!" shares Elise M.

Private walk-in sites: Secluded tent camping spots at Twin Valley Campground offer additional privacy from RV areas. "While the walk-in site I stayed at with my son (263) really isn't all that far from where you park, it still leaves you surrounded by trees, and secluded from seeing other campers," explains Paul N.
Lake activities: Multiple lakes throughout the region provide fishing and boating opportunities with rental options at some locations. "We rented a 12 person pontoon from Cork Down Saloon Boat Rentals and that was great!" reports Tate T. who stayed at Yellowstone Lake State Park.
Horse-friendly trails: Dedicated bridle paths throughout Governor Dodge State Park maintain separation from hikers, with water access points for horses. "Trailer parking near the campsites provides convenient access to trailheads" with trails that accommodate riders of varying experience levels.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Book equestrian camping sites at least 3-4 months in advance for summer weekends, as they fill quickly. "Peak season reservations are a definite (weeks to months in advance for weekends)," advises Jen L.
Wildlife awareness: Secure food and garbage properly as raccoons are common visitors to camping areas. "Beware of raccoons at this campground they are BOLD!" warns Jen L., while another camper at White Mound County Campground notes the campground's "lovely atmosphere" but reminds campers to be prepared for wildlife.
Weather considerations: Spring camping often brings significant rainfall and muddy conditions, which can affect trail access. "Not all 'driveways' are level which, unfortunately, we discovered in site 33. We slept with our heads lower than our feet in our camper van," shares Lee D.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Choose campgrounds with dedicated recreational facilities for children. "Perfect for a family get away - showers, flush toilets, lots of hiking (but trails aren't very challenging), swimming area and boat launch, playground. Basically a little bit of everything that makes it family friendly," notes Jen L.
Group site options: For larger family gatherings, reserve specialized group camping areas. "Stayed here last year with a group of friends! Had 2 different group sites and both were awesome! A lot of space and not close to other group sites so it was nice to not have to worry about surrounding people!" explains Amanda J.
Entertainment options: Some private campgrounds offer structured activities throughout the day. "Plenty of things to do here to keep the kids engaged and busy very clean Campground the campsites are well-kept swimming Pond was clean and plenty of fun things to climb on and slide down," says David H. about Merry Mac's Campground.

Site selection: Research specific site dimensions before booking, as many campgrounds have varied terrain. "Our site was right next to camp hosts, and very near showers which were clean and lots of hot water. Site was clean and nice," reports Hubert M.
Low clearance warnings: Watch for height restrictions on park roads and entrances. "There is an oak tree near entry with low branches and it took the AC off our friend's fifth wheel. There is also a low hanging overpass and it took the roofs off TWO fifth wheels while we were staying there," cautions Kathy L.
Dump station timing: Plan departure times to avoid lines at sanitary stations during peak checkout periods. "The line to clean out the tanks was long and blocks the way in and out. The roads need repair, many potholes. Otherwise very nice campground," advises Bill L.
