Wapocoma Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Reservations are available at Wapocoma Campground, a privately run RV and tent campground along the South Branch Potomac River outside Romney, West Virginia, open from mid-April through the end of October. Sites run large by most campground standards, many of them grassy and level, with electric, water, and sewer hookups available for rigs up to 60 feet. The campground has a mix of seasonal residents and short-term visitors, which gives it a neighborhood feel that some campers appreciate and others find less rustic than state park alternatives.

River access is the main draw. Anglers report strong numbers on the South Branch, with catch counts of 40 to 50 fish a day mentioned more than once. Paddlers can put in upstream at Old Fields and float directly to camp. The gravel beach along the river frontage gives swimmers and tubers a natural launch point. JD L. notes that tent sites sit "about 100 feet from the river" and are "sheltered by tall trees," though tent pads are not assigned, so campers choose their own spots in the grass.

The bathhouse draws consistent praise for cleanliness across multiple reviews, and the campground provides WiFi, a dump station, and a playground. Quiet hours run strictly from 11pm to 8am. Campers should note the no-bully-breed pet policy before arriving. The town of Augusta is nearby for resupply runs. For a broader look at the region, camping near Romney includes nearby options such as Big Anchor Campground and Middle Ridge Campground. Book ahead for summer weekends, when river-facing sites fill quickly.

Many campers appreciated the spacious riverside sites, clean facilities, and friendly staff at affordable rates. Some noted the more developed feel rather than natural camping atmosphere.

Nice, but.....

The campground was nice, but not really our style. We typically like state parks or campgrounds similar. This campground is more like a parking lot. With that being said, our spot had an amazing view looking over the South Branch river.
The bath house was nice and clean. The other campers were super friendly. There is river access for tubing, kayaking and fishing.

A great family campground

This is a great campground. Friendly staff. Affordable rates. Sites are level mostly with grass sites. Many of the sites are very large. There is a good mix of seasonal, yearly, and in-and-outers. It is right on the river for swimming, kayaking, and fishing. There is a playground for the kids and bring the bikes for them to ride around the campground. It is a nice family campground. It's close to the town of Augusta for supplies or extra groceries. Electric golf carts are allowed. Strict quiet hours from 11pm-8am. Due to COVID restrictions tent camping isn't allowed due to bath house being closed. On a normal summer, this place has lots of events and activities for everyone including a Bluegrass Festival at the end of June.

Awesome Place

Right on the river! Plenty of room for Big 5th wheels the lower sights are a little close but nothing terrible. People are very friendly. You can float the river from old fields right to your camp! Full hook ups very clean. Price is right too. Great weekend place.

we really wanted to go to this campground, but “no bully breeds” allowed means we will never go or recommend

Gem in the hills of Romney WV

Owners a very nice and accommodating. Lots of RV sites but we stayed in the tent sites about 100 feet from the river. I can’t remember the price but it was very reasonable. Each site had a picnic table and was sheltered by tall trees. Tent sites are a little close together but not too bad. I tent pads, you just pick an area in the grass and pitch your tent. The campground has a large river frontage with a gravel beach. The central bath house was reasonably clean with three or four shower stalls per side. The only thing I didn’t like was there was no privacy when you exited the shower, just a large common changing area but we made the best of it. This a gorgeous area with lots of places along River Rd to put in a kayak or float tubes of which we usually do both. Fishing is great as well, we never catch anything huge but the numbers are always fantastic with a 40 or 50 day not uncommon.
