George Washington National Forest maintains Little Fort Campground as a free, drive-in dispersed site in the Shenandoah Valley region near camping near Woodstock. Nine numbered sites are arranged around a central vault toilet, each with a fire ring, picnic table, and a designated tent pad. Campers claim spots using a simple flip-tag board at the entrance, switching a washer from green to red. No reservations, no fees. Pack out all trash.
The tent pads are flat but hard-packed, and at least one reviewer notes that stakes don't penetrate the surface well. Picnic tables at several sites show wear. The campground sits adjacent to the Peters Mill Run/Taskers Gap OHV System, so OHV traffic is audible through the afternoon on busy weekends, typically tapering off around 7 PM. A creek and short trails run behind the sites. Campers with noise-sensitive dogs may want to plan accordingly.
Cell service is essentially nonexistent at the campground regardless of carrier. Multiple reviewers on both Verizon and T-Mobile report losing signal roughly 20 minutes down the mountain, so download maps and directions before heading up the winding access road. There is no running water on site. Despite arriving at 6 or 7 PM on weekends, several campers found sites still available, though Memorial Day weekend filled to capacity. As Matthew M. notes, "very respectful neighbors so it was very quiet." Those looking for low-key, no-frills forest camping with campgrounds around George Washington National Forest as a broader base will find this a reliable overnight stop.
